The Gardens at Warwick Forest Receives National Award for Improving Quality of Care

July 21, 2015

Newport News, VA –The Gardens at Warwick Forest, a Riverside Health System nursing facility, has been recognized as a 2015 recipient of the Bronze –Commitment to Quality Award for its dedication to improving the lives of residents through quality care. There were only five other facilities in Virginia that received this award, and The Gardens at Warwick Forest is the only one on the Peninsula to have received it.

The award is the first of three distinctions possible through the National Quality Award Program, presented by the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL). The program honors centers across the nation that have demonstrated their commitment to improving quality care for seniors and individuals with disabilities.

"It is a great honor to be recognized by AHCA/NCAL with a National Quality Award," said Don Lundin, Administrator of The Gardens. "For The Gardens, this award is simply the first leg on our journey to excellence."

Dr. Emmeline Gasink, Medical Director for Warwick Forest, explained "We are committed to delivering the Riverside Care Difference, which focuses our time and resources on keeping our patients safe, treating them with kindness and respect, and striving to continually improve quality of care."

"Improving the lives of the residents and families we care for every day is part of that commitment, and this award symbolizes the dedication we have to delivering quality care," she said.

Implemented by AHCA/NCAL in 1996, the National Quality Award Program is centered on the core values and criteria of the Baldrige PeRiverside Foundationormance Excellence Program. The program assists providers of long term and post-acute care services in achieving their quality of care goals.

The program has three levels: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Centers begin the quality improvement process at the Bronze level, where they develop an organizational profile with essential peRiverside Foundationormance elements such as vision and mission statements and an assessment of customers' expectations. Bronze applicants must also demonstrate their ability to implement a peRiverside Foundationormance improvement system. As a recipient of the Bronze - Commitment to Quality Award, The Gardens can now move forward in developing approaches and achieving peRiverside Foundationormance levels that meet the criteria required for the Silver - Achievement in Quality Award.

"The Gardens at Warwick Forest has demonstrated its commitment to providing quality care and I commend them for that," said the AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Board of Overseers Chair Christine Boldt. "I encourage The Gardens to continue their quality journey by striving for the Silver and Gold levels."

Other Riverside nursing facilities will apply for the Bronze Award in 2016. The application process is intensive and can take several months;however, becoming part of this program is indicative of the highest level commitment to delivering quality care.
