Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital (RSMH) in Onancock and Riverside Walter Reed Hospital (RWRH) in Gloucester have been named to the 2026 Chartis Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals list, earning national recognition for excellence in quality, outcomes, patient experience and operational performance. In 2026, RSMH and RWRH are the only hospitals in Virginia to receive this distinction, underscoring Riverside Health’s leadership in delivering high-quality rural care across the Commonwealth.

The Chartis Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals program honors high-performing rural hospitals based on the results of the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX®, which evaluates hospitals across measures of quality, patient outcomes, cost and operational efficiency. Recognition on this list affirms that patients in Virginia’s rural communities have access to care that meets the highest national performance standards, without having to leave their region for treatment.

For Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital, this marks the 6th consecutive year on the prestigious list, underscoring its sustained commitment to delivering high-quality care to Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

“We are incredibly proud to once again be recognized among the top rural hospitals in the nation. This is really about our team and our community,” said Kristie Finney, Interim President of Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital. “We live here. Our families live here. To know that the care we’re providing right here on the Shore is being recognized nationally is something we’re incredibly proud of. Our team is deeply committed to ensuring our neighbors have access to safe, high-quality healthcare close to home.”

For Riverside Walter Reed Hospital, the first-time recognition highlights the hospital’s growing impact in the region.

“Being named to the Chartis Top 100 list for the first time is an extraordinary achievement for our team and our community,” said Shelly Johnson, President of Riverside Walter Reed Hospital. “This honor reflects the dedication of our providers, nurses, clinicians and team members who work every day to provide compassionate, high-performing care. Our patients benefit not only from excellent local services, but also from seamless access to the full continuum of care across Riverside Health.”

As part of Riverside Health, both hospitals are connected to an integrated regional system that provides patients with access to advanced specialty care, innovative treatment options and coordinated services beyond their local communities. This connection ensures that while care begins close to home, patients have the support of a comprehensive health care network at every stage of their journey.

As the only two hospitals in Virginia recognized on the 2026 Chartis Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals list, Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital and Riverside Walter Reed Hospital exemplify Riverside Health’s commitment to delivering exceptional, patient-centered care in every community it serves. Both hospitals remain dedicated to strengthening the health and well-being of the Eastern Shore and Middle Peninsula and ensuring high-quality care is consistently available close to home.
