The Orchard Recognized Among Nations Best

November 01, 2018

WARSAW, Va. - The American College of Health Care Administrators recently honored The Orchard administrator, Pam Doshier, with the Eli Pick Facility Leadership Award. The award is based upon criteria ranging from facility census to state survey results. It recognizes administrators who have led their organizations to a high level of quality. The award places The Orchard among the top 11 percent of skilled nursing facilities in the country.

It is the emphasis on quality that Doshier believes was the standout reason for this recognition, which comes on the heels of other accomplishments for The Orchard in the last year. The facility earned a CMS five-star rating in 2017 and earned the 2017 Silver Award from the American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living.

“We invest a lot of time in quality measures at The Orchard,” Doshier points out. “We compare our performance against state and national benchmarks; we study any measurements that are outliers; and we take a focused approach in addressing issues on an ongoing basis – not just when it’s time for a survey.”

Doshier also points out that her staff, led by many long-term team members, have always been focused on quality. As a leader, Doshier sees her role as supporting her team, but she looks to them for solutions. And she is willing to roll up her sleeves alongside her team, whether that means answering a call bell or talking with the family of a resident about their concerns.

“We’re all here for our residents and patients,” Doshier says. “It doesn’t matter what your title is because we support one another in providing care.”

When Doshier came to The Orchard in 2011, her goals were to create stability for key leadership positions, ensure that quality care was consistently being delivered, and to support the spirit of teamwork within the facility. She knows the value of continuous feedback and learning as a key driver of building trust among her team. Getting her team aligned has led to the success that is currently recognized by the Eli Pick Leadership Award.

“Our quality recognitions truly reflect the care that we’re providing,” Doshier notes, consistent with the Riverside mission, “to care for others as we would care for those we love.” Doshier wants to foster an environment that reflects the kind of facility where she would want her own mother or family to stay.

The American College of Health Care Administrators was founded in 1962 as a professional society for long-term care administrators. The Eli Pick Leadership Award was established in 2008 to recognize excellence beyond the Five-Star rating system.
