Yesterday, Riverside Health celebrated the ribbon cutting of the new 200,000 square foot state-of-the-art Riverside Smithfield Hospital (RSH). More than 300 people, including Gov. Glenn Youngkin and other dignitaries, joined Riverside for the dedication of the new facility. The 50-bed hospital located at 19339 Benns Grant Boulevard, scheduled to open early January 2026, is a step forward to providing equitable and accessible care for those living in Smithfield and Isle of Wight.

“The ribbon cutting is more than a celebration of a new hospital. It is a moment that reflects the strength and dedication of our entire community. For years our neighbors, partners, and local leaders have worked toward a shared goal of bringing high quality, compassionate health care closer to home,” says Jessica Macalino, MHA, President of Riverside Smithfield Hospital. “This facility stands as a testament to what we can achieve together. We are grateful for the trust the community has placed in us and we look forward to caring for them beginning in early January 2026.”

The hospital features modern inpatient units, advanced surgical suites with integrated digital technology, a dedicated intensive care unit and a 24/7 emergency department equipped to handle high acuity cases. Imaging capabilities include CT, MRI, ultrasound, digital X ray, and mammography, allowing community members to access diagnostic services in one place. In addition to the hospital, the Riverside Smithfield Campus includes the Jamison-Longford Medical Office Building, which opened in September 2025 and provides convenient access to outpatient services.

Together, these services respond directly to long-standing need for expanded access to care in one of the fastest growing areas in Southeast Virginia. Prior to this project, many residents traveled significant distances for inpatient care and emergency services.

"This facility marks a new chapter in how we support the health of the communities in Isle of Wight and the surrounding areas. It represents years of thoughtful planning and a shared commitment to expanding access to care in ways that truly meet people where they are,” says Mike Dacey, M.D., President & CEO. “Our focus moving forward is simple. We want to work alongside community members, local leaders, and partner organizations to help every person reach their best level of health. We are here to listen, to collaborate, and to make sure this hospital becomes a place that strengthens the wellbeing of the entire region."

This hospital joins Riverside’s four additional acute care facilities in Newport News, Williamsburg, Gloucester and Onancock. The Smithfield campus strengthens Riverside’s regional continuum of care, ensuring residents have coordinated access to specialists and advanced treatments. The Smithfield Campus also includes the Jamison Longford Medical Office Building, which opened in September 2025 and offers outpatient services that complement the care provided by the hospital.

The project began with initial planning in 2021, followed by groundbreaking in July 2023 and two and a half years of construction managed in close coordination with local partners and state agencies. With construction complete, the hospital is now entering the final phase of preparation, including equipment installation, staff training, and regulatory inspections ahead of the early January 2026 opening.
