To better serve women in Isle of Wight County and surrounding communities, Riverside Smithfield Hospital (RSH) will add stereotactic breast biopsy to its diagnostic services this October, with scheduling available beginning October 27, 2026.
Stereotactic breast biopsy is an image-guided procedure designed to target small areas of suspicious breast tissue that cannot be felt during a physical exam or seen clearly on ultrasound. This minimally invasive procedure uses mammography imaging and advanced computer guidance to precisely locate and sample tissue for further testing.
“When additional testing is needed after a mammogram, having access to timely, high-quality care close to home can make a meaningful difference for patients,” said Vincent Brass, Imaging Director at Riverside Smithfield Hospital. “By offering stereotactic breast biopsy on our campus, we can help patients receive answers sooner, reduce the burden of traveling for care and ensure they are connected with the resources and support they need as quickly as possible.”
Stereotactic breast biopsy is performed in an outpatient setting and requires only a small incision. The procedure typically results in minimal scarring, shorter recovery times, and less discomfort than traditional surgical biopsy procedures. Most patients are able to return to their normal activities the following day.
Access to advanced diagnostic tools is an important component of comprehensive breast health services. Early diagnosis plays a critical role in treatment planning and can help patients and providers make timely, informed decisions about care.
“Our mission is to be a trusted partner in our communities’ health at every stage of care,” said Jessica Macalino, MHA, President of Riverside Smithfield Hospital. “Whether through prevention, screening, diagnosis, or treatment, expanding access to advanced services like stereotactic breast biopsy brings us one step closer to achieving that goal while improving the patient experience.”
Riverside also offers stereotactic breast biopsy in additional diagnostic and imaging centers in Newport News, Gloucester and Williamsburg.
