Vincent's Story
After four shoulder surgeries, two on each side, Vincent Poto knows firsthand the importance of expert orthopedic care. Having previously experienced successful shoulder surgery with Dr. Paul McLendon at Riverside Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Specialists, he once again turned to Dr. McLendon after a fall on the ice resulted in a torn rotator cuff.

Since retiring from the railroad, Mr. Poto has led an active, purpose-driven life. He volunteers extensively with the Red Cross and Team Rubicon, serves as a CPR and Basic Life Support instructor, and even participates as a long-distance swimmer. His drive to serve others stems from surviving a life-threatening motorcycle accident decades ago, an experience that continues to inspire his commitment to helping others.
Throughout the years, he has consistently trusted Riverside for his orthopedic needs, including for a previous wrist surgery performed by Dr. Kyriakedes.
“I keep choosing the Riverside Orthopedic team for my care because I’ve had excellent results,” he said. “I would tell anyone who has shoulder pain or an injury to go see Dr. McLendon and his team, including the therapy team, to receive the best care.”
Dr. McLendon and his care team performed a successful repair, addressing the rotator cuff damage. Through a combination of surgical expertise and disciplined rehabilitation, Mr. Poto is already ahead of schedule in his recovery.
“We were able to complete a solid repair of the rotator cuff, giving the shoulder the stability and structure it needs to heal properly. His progress has been excellent because he’s followed his recovery plan carefully,” said Dr. McLendon.
Beyond surgical care, Dr. McLendon emphasizes the importance of recognizing symptoms early and exploring the right treatment approach.
“If you’ve been living with persistent shoulder pain that limits movement or disrupts sleep, it may be a rotator cuff tear. While many patients improve with conservative treatments, surgery becomes the best option when symptoms persist or when full strength and function are needed for work, sports or active lifestyles.”
Today, Mr. Poto is well on his way back to the activities he enjoys most, thanks to expert care, determination and a commitment to recovery.
