The American Cancer Society has selected Riverside Health System CEO, William B. “Bill” Downey to serve as honorary chair for this year’s Relay For Life® of Williamsburg, Va. Executive Leadership Team volunteer John Otey as well as the other members selected Downey as the Honorary Chair for his dedication to eradicating cancer and supporting the Williamsburg community.

Riverside Health System has been a long-time partner with the American Cancer Society and have utilized many patient support services and programs while sponsoring local events like Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and Relay For Life. Riverside is proud to care for the citizens of the Greater Williamsburg area with a full range of services including the most up to date treatments in Cancer Care.

“Whether we come together in person or virtually for this event, let’s rally together in the fight against cancer and make a difference to eliminate Cancer,” said Downey. “We envision a future where we no longer live with the threat of cancer. I see the impact daily in my professional life and my wife is a two time cancer survivor so working to raise awareness and help support programs to assist those in need of education, testing and treatment is vitally important. There is a greater urgency since COVID-19 forced the postponement of fundraising activities this past year. We want you to help us give hope the advantage for the future to be cancer free.”

For more than 35 years, participants and volunteers across the world have come together to honor and remember loved ones and take action for lifesaving change. Funds raised help the American Cancer Society conduct breakthrough research, provide 24/7 support for cancer patients and access to lifesaving screenings.

“Fundraising through Relay For Life is more important than ever and we can’t allow progress to be put on hold because of the pandemic. Cancer won’t stop, and neither can we,” said Downey.

There are many ways to get involved.
