Gloucester, Va. — In an effort to enhance services for patients on the Middle Peninsula, Riverside will expand its infectious disease clinic to Gloucester, health system leadership announced this week.

Rebekah Sensenig, D.O., an Infectious Disease Specialist for Riverside Medical Group, will begin seeing patients in Gloucester on the first Wednesday of every month. Sensenig will hold morning office hours starting Dec. 2, 2020 at Riverside Hayes Medical Center.

“Right now, we have a large number of patients driving from Gloucester to Newport News for care,” Sensenig said. “By seeing patients at least monthly in Gloucester we hope will help our patients reduce their travel time for care, and further reduce barriers for them seeking the medical treatments they need.”

Sensenig said patients in need of treatment from an infectious physician typically suffer from conditions that include bone and joint infections, post-operative infections, pulmonary diseases and HIV.

“This expansion helps us get involved in their care before they get discharged from the hospital or before it’s too late,” Sensenig said. “Usually by the time patients get to see us in Newport News, it’s been a couple of weeks.”

By treating patients earlier, outcomes are expected to improve.

This announcement comes just as Riverside completes its first month of bringing its infectious disease consulting services directly to patients at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital.

“If patients need a consult while they are in the hospital, we can now provide that,” Sensenig said.

Riverside’s Newport News infectious disease practice will facilitate scheduling and referrals necessary for all outpatient appointments in the new Gloucester location. For more information or to make an appointment, call 757-596-7115.

Riverside Hayes Medical Center is located at 2246 George Washington Memorial Highway in Hayes. Hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
