Gloucester native Lori Gatzke, M.D. is accepting new patients.
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Riverside Medical Group recently welcomed a new provider to its Suburban Family Practice office in Newport News. Raised in nearby Gloucester, Lori Gatzke, M.D. is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and accepting new patients.
After completing undergraduate studies at the College of William & Mary, Gatzke earned her medical degree from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and completed its ChesteRiverside Foundationield Family Practice Residency Program.
When every medical school rotation and specialty appealed to her, Gatzke decided that her calling was family medicine, a field with an all-encompassing diversity that she loves and believes is important today.
She is especially interested in women's health, smoking cessation and dermatologic procedures, driven by a medical philosophy that revolves around educating and empowering her patients to take control of their health.
"As a primary care physician, I see a wide range of patients - everybody from newborns, to infants, to children, to young adults, and seniors in the community," said Gatzke. "The reason I love doing what I do is because every day I get to meet tons of new people with different life stories and situations."
A true local, Gatzke grew up in Gloucester as the daughter of a teacher and a U.S. Army serviceman who recently lost his life to lung cancer. In elementary school, she met her husband Michael, now an Army veteran and member of the Air National Guard.?
Gatzke values the community and her family roots, which aligns peRiverside Foundationectly with the Riverside philosophy.
"When I was in high school in Gloucester County, I actually volunteered at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital, and then when I graduated high school, I went to college and studied science - and went straight into medical school," said Gatzke. "I think the Riverside care difference is a very valuable philosophy, because it is caring for people as if they are members of our own family, and that's what we try to do here."
Gatzke and her husband have two young children. When not caring for patients, she enjoys experimenting in the kitchen, reading and fictional writing.
