Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools (WJCC) announced an extension of its partnership with Riverside Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Specialists to provide certified athletic trainers (ATCs) for sports medicine coverage at four Williamsburg middle schools; Berkley Middle School, Lois H. Hornsby Middle School, Toano Middle School and James Blair Middle School. ATCs will serve as the first stop of medical care for Williamsburg student-athletes during practice or competition.

“As many of us are former athletes, our team understands how important and meaningful sports can be to students,” says John Barley, D.O., a sports medicine physician with Riverside Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Specialists. “We are thrilled to continue to partner with WJCC to help keep their student-athletes safe and healthy so they can continue to play the sports they love.”

The strategic partnership will extend through the 2027-2028 school year. Riverside Sports Medicine has partnered with WJCC schools since 2018 and will continue to partner with the school division’s athletic care network, including ATCs, to evaluate injuries, provide on-site medical coverage during practices and home events, and give first aid and similar emergency assistance when necessary.

“At Riverside Sports Medicine, our top priority is ensuring athletes play the games they love,” says John LaRue, sports physical therapy and performance director. “Through our certified athletic trainers, we are excited to partner with student athletes to provide on-site sideline care and reduce risk of injuries during play through education.”

In addition to supporting WJCC, Riverside provides sports medicine coverage to Lionsbridge soccer club, Christopher Newport University, Newport News Public Schools, Isle of Wight high schools and York County Public Schools.
