Riverside Health System was recently honored by the Newport News School Board as a recipient of the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) 2019 Business Honor Roll award for ongoing support of the community’s public schools. Additionally, Riverside was recognized as “An Outstanding Partner in Education” for exemplary support of the students and staff of Newport News Public Schools.
The awards acknowledge the Riverside College of Health Careers’ Medical Careers Club team as well as other Riverside staff and faculty who provided hours of educational and enjoyable activities for Newport News Public School students.
Other highlights of Riverside’s ongoing partnership with Newport News schools and the community include contributed equipment and curriculum support for the Governor’s Health Science Academy at Warwick High School. The Academy’s integrated curriculum helps students establish connections between mathematics, science and technology, and gives them a chance to explore career opportunities through mentors, career and technical education, internships, job shadowing experiences and more.
Riverside was also recognized for its continuing support and provision of Riverside Health Improvement Center clinics, which offer free preventive health and wellness services and education to students, family members, staff and the community. In partnership with An Achievable Dream Academies, the Riverside Health Improvement Center provided more than 5,500 student assessments and sick visits during the 2018 – 19 school year.

Underscoring that local businesses have the power to shape community attitudes about public schools, the VSBA Business Honor Roll provides a way for local school divisions to recognize local businesses for their support. The Business Honor Roll is presented each spring and helps school divisions across Virginia thank businesses of all sizes for their vital contributions.
