Riverside is the only system based in Virginia to achieve Level 9 certification, using technology to drive further improvements in outcomes, care quality and patient experience.

Newport News, Va. – Riverside is pleased to announce that the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) awarded the health system with its 2020 Digital Health Most Wired recognition as a certified level 9. The annual survey assesses how effectively healthcare organizations apply core and advanced technologies into their clinical and business programs to improve health and care in their communities.

“Digital technology has been a driver of innovation in healthcare for many years now, but never to the degree that we saw in 2020 with the pandemic,” said CHIME President and CEO Russell P. Branzell. “The Digital Health Most Wired program underscores why healthcare organizations keep pushing themselves to be digital leaders and shows what amazing feats they can achieve. This certification recognizes their exemplary performance in 2020.”

According to CHIME, organizations achieving level 9 certification not only implement advanced technologies but leverage those technologies in innovative ways to realize meaningful outcomes, including quality of care, improved patient experience, reduced cost and improved access to health care services.

Riverside’s rapid growth in telehealth, its patient estimate tools, and its commitment to OpenNotes are examples of the efforts that have resulted in significant improvement in quality outcomes.

It is the 16th year in a row that Riverside has received Most Wired recognition. This year, Riverside received the Performance Excellence Award for earning level 9 certification in the CHIME surveys for acute, ambulatory and long-term care. Riverside is the only health system based in Virginia to earn level 9 certification in any of the 2020 surveys, and it is one of only seven systems nationwide to achieve level 9 certification for long-term care.

“The global pandemic has placed even greater value on the technological enhancements we have been strategically implementing across Riverside Health System,” said Ross Younger, M.D., Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Riverside Health System. “We are proud of our 2020 Most Wired recognition and how we are able to use technology to better serve our patients, driving continuous improvement in readmissions, patient experience and other outcomes.”

A total of 30,135 organizations were represented in the 2020 Digital Health Most Wired program, which this year included four separate surveys: domestic, ambulatory, long-term care and international. The surveys assessed the adoption, integration and impact of technologies in healthcare organizations at all stages of development, from early development to industry leading.

Each participating organization received a customized benchmarking report, an overall score and scores for individual levels in eight segments: infrastructure; security; business/disaster recovery; administrative/supply chain; analytics/data management; interoperability/population health; patient engagement; and clinical quality/safety.

This is the third year that CHIME has conducted the survey and overseen the program. In each successive year, CHIME has expanded the survey to capture more types of organizations that serve patients across the continuum of care. CHIME also continues to promote the program internationally to provide a global overview of digital health advancements.

As in past years, CHIME will publish an industry trends report based on Digital Health Most Wired responses from U.S. participants. The 2020 National Trends Report is scheduled to be released in November during CHIME20 Digital.
