Bay Transit, a division of Bay Aging, and Riverside Tappahannock Hospital celebrated the opening of a new bus shelter at the hospital during a ribbon cutting ceremony June 5, 2019.
“We are excited to have this new shelter in place so that patients, visitors and team members waiting on the bus are protected from the elements,” said Liz Martin, Vice President and Administrator of Riverside Tappahannock Hospital. “We appreciate all the work that is happening in our region to improve public transportation access points because they provide a valuable service to so many of our residents.”
Bay Transit’s new bus shelters provide protection from the elements, bench seating and solar powered lighting that automatically illuminate at dusk and turn off at dawn. The new bus shelter is the fifth in Bay Transit’s 10 county service area and the third in Essex County. New bus shelters will also be installed in Callao in Northumberland County, and Urbanna in Middlesex County.
Since 1996, Bay Transit has been providing public transportation services throughout the Middle Peninsula, Northern Neck and New Kent and Charles City Counties.
Bay Transit provided over 140,000 safe, reliable and affordable rides in 2018.
While 40% of Bay Transit riders are commuting to work, riders also depend on Bay Transit to access health care services, education, shopping and dining, recreation and more.
“We are thankful to Riverside Health System for the generous support they provided covering the installation costs of the shelter,” said Ken Pollock, Director of Bay Transit. “We also want to thank Essex County and the Town of Tappahannock for their on-going support of public transportation for all people.”
