A Life of Adventure and Preparedness:
George and Kate Richmond’s Journey to Patriots Colony

For George and Kate Richmond, moving has always been part of their story. With a shared sense of adventure and a knack for embracing new opportunities, their March 2024 transition to Patriots Colony At Williamsburg was simply the next stop on their well-planned journey.

A Life on the Move

George, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel, spent 22 years serving in the communications-electronics field, with assignments across the United States, Europe and even a stint in the Arctic.

Kate, a lifelong educator and school administrator, taught middle school through higher education students and works as an educational consultant and writer.

The couple met at Rutgers University in 1962 and married the day after their 1965 graduation.

“It was a busy weekend,” Kate said with a smile.

From there, they built a life defined by movement, curiosity and thoughtful planning.

Finding Their Place in Williamsburg

After George retired at Langley Air Force Base, the couple stayed in the greater Williamsburg and Virginia Peninsula area, drawn to its history, charm and strong sense of community.

They built homes in Ford’s Colony and later in Colonial Heritage, remaining within the same zip code. Before that, they lived for many years in York County.

“No single event nudged us to move here,” George said about Patriots Colony. “We’re movers. About every 10 to 12 years, we like to try a new place, a new opportunity. It just felt like the right thing to do.”

Their two sons, one in Seattle and the other in Northern Virginia, were intrigued by their decision. “They’ve always been positive about our moves,” Kate says, “and enthusiastic about our life choices.”

Patriots Colony: The Perfect Fit

The couple explored various Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) before selecting Patriots Colony. The community’s organization, scale and welcoming atmosphere stood out.

“There are a lot of amenities, but it still feels intimate,” Kate said.

Settling into their villa, they appreciate the beauty of the setting—close to Jamestown, Colonial Williamsburg and The College of William and Mary—and convenient to shopping and “date night” venues.

A Life of Engagement and Service

A typical day for the Richmonds is filled with purpose.

George volunteers with AARP TaxAide, helping people prepare their taxes. Both are actively involved in the James City County Lions Club. Kate continues her lifelong passion for education by teaching Literacy for Life classes that serve individuals working toward citizenship or the GED.

Even before moving, they maintained an active lifestyle with numerous off-campus commitments. The transition to Patriots Colony allowed them to continue those activities while embracing new ones.

A Legacy of Preparedness

Their philosophy of preparedness has been a guiding principle in every decision they’ve made in their lives.

“We don’t know what the future will bring, but we believe in making the best decisions we can now—not waiting until the last minute,” George said.

At 82, both George and Kate approach life with the same pragmatism and enthusiasm they always have.

Their move to Patriots Colony, facilitated smoothly by the team, was one of the easiest they’ve ever made. “Moving is always a challenge, but Patriots Colony made it as seamless as possible,” Kate said.

From Miami and New Orleans to Massachusetts and Connecticut to Rutgers, Langley Air Force Base and now Patriots Colony, the Richmonds have embraced every chapter of their lives with a sense of joy, optimism and purpose.

As they continue settling into their new home, George and Kate are guided by their philosophy: thoughtfully prepare, actively engage, and eagerly seek the ne
