Riverside Welcomes New Hand Surgeon to Orthopedicspedic Practices

February 18, 2020

James Kyriakedes Newport News, Va. - On any given day, James C. Kyriakedes, M.D., treats patients with hand, wrist and elbow problems. They come from varied backgrounds, of all ages and occupations.

But the one thing that unites them all, Kyriakedes said, is that despite their differences, whether they are an athlete, a musician, a grandmother or a manual laborer, “all of these people are highly motivated to get back to those activities that they love,” some of which helps “put food on the table for their family.”

Today, Kyriakedes brings that passion for helping patients to Riverside as the health system’s newest hand surgeon with Riverside Orthopedic, Sports Medicine & Physiatry Specialists on Warwick Blvd. in Newport News, as well as Riverside Orthopedic Specialists – Williamsburg on Kings Way.

Originally from Ohio, Kyriakedes earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati.

He completed an orthopedic surgery residency at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, followed by fellowship training in hand and upper extremity surgery at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. Kyriakedes is eligible for board certification by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

Recognizing that hands are people’s center of interaction with the world, Kyriakedes sees his work as an opportunity to improve the quality of patients’ lives limited by injuries or degenerative conditions.

His areas of special interest include hand, wrist and elbow arthritis, including joint fusions, joint replacement and arthroscopy; traumatic injuries from the fingertip to elbow, causing fractures (broken bones), dislocations and tendon and nerve lacerations; as well as sports injuries to the fingers, thumb, wrist and elbow. He also treats hand numbness or tingling, generalized hand and arm pain, finger triggering and hand tumors.

Training at busy academic trauma and referral centers prepared Kyriakedes with an imperative balance of cutting-edge surgical options and tried-and-true “gold standard” treatments.

Kyriakedes treats his patients as he would want his family treated, keeping in mind that many conditions can be healed non-operatively, while others require surgical intervention to minimize pain and to maximize clinical and functional outcomes. His goal is to tailor treatment to each patient’s unique situation and expectations.

“When I first heard the Riverside mission to care for others as we would care for those we love,” Kyriakedes said, “I knew I was at the right place.”
