Neurosurgery

From the simplest to the most complex case, Riverside Neurosciences offers treatment modalities and care equivalent to the largest medical centers in the country. Employing 'gold standard' technology and high resolution 3D imaging gives unprecedented precision when micro-measurements count

In the Neuro Interventional Suite, Biplane imaging plays an important role in mapping the blood vessels prior to surgery. During endovascular procedures, it provides a more precise treatment picture that is safer for the patient.

Biplane is digital X-ray technology that uses two mounted rotating cameras, one on each side of a patient, to take simultaneous pictures. The cameras move front to back and side to side to produce 3D images that show detailed vessel and soft tissue anatomy.

This allows neurovascular specialists to follow the path of blood flow through vessels and creates a "roadmap" for reaching and treating the precise location of disease, malformation or life-threatening conditions, including blood clots and aneurysms.

Biplane imaging is used in many interventional treatments including coiling, carotid stenting, embolization, thrombolysis, vertebroplasty and vasospasm.

O-arm provides real-time, intraoperative imaging of a patient's anatomy with high quality images in both two and three dimensions. This multi-dimensional surgical imaging platform is optimized for use in spine, orthopedic and trauma-related surgeries.

A large field-of-view and distortion free flat panel technology provide precise image quality for viewing any part of the patient's skeletal anatomy from head to toe.

This technology allows the surgeon to make fewer and smaller incisions, precisely navigate delicate areas like the spinal cord, while minimizing pain and recovery time for patients.

Using StealthStation neuronavigation, surgeons can visualize the patient's anatomy in 3D prior to and during surgery while also seeing the precise location of their surgical instrumentation.

This real-time tracking system allows surgeons to:

  • Move within the brain with detailed, highly accurate positioning information
  • Perform less-invasive procedures
  • Help improve clinical outcomes

The Gamma Knife is a painless and noninvasive radiation device that delivers focused and highly accurate beams of radiation to the area of the brain requiring treatment.

One of the most advanced forms of stereotactic radiosurgery, the Gamma Knife is widely considered the gold standard for treatment of:

  • Malignant and benign brain tumors and lesions
  • Arteriovascular malformations
  • Certain functional disorders
  • Trigeminal neuralgia

About the treatment
An external frame is fixed to the patient's head and an MRI is obtained. These images are used to create the 3D images in the stereotactic system to ensure accurate identification of the area to be treated and precise delivery of the radiation to the target.

The neurosurgeon, radiation oncologist and medical physicist use highly sophisticated computer software to determine the size, location and shape of the area to be treated. The Gamma Knife uses 192 radioactive sources to precisely direct beams of radiation to the specific target while sparing surrounding tissue.

After treatment is completed, the patient is monitored for a short time to ensure there are no immediate complications. The patient is able to go home the same day.

The Varian Edge is a radiation delivery system that allows very accurate and precise delivery of radiation beams to targets within the body while avoiding surrounding healthy tissue.

The Varian Edge system is designed to perform advanced, noninvasive cancer procedures anywhere in the body - including the brain, spine, head and neck, adrenal gland, lung, liver and pancreas - with extreme precision and low toxicity.

Benefits include none of the risks of surgery. There is no blood loss, fewer complications and faster recovery. The Varian Edge also offers a noninvasive option for patients who are no longer able to be treated with other methods of care.
