Excellence in Stroke Care

Across Riverside Health, you can count on our stroke program for the right care at the right time. Our team works tirelessly to improve our standards and deliver exceptional treatment, guided by the belief that each patient should be cared for as we would care for those we love.

Clinical Excellence and Adherence to the Highest Standards

We pursue national accreditations to ensure we hold ourselves to the very highest standards in stroke care. These rigorous programs require us to review and learn from every patient we treat, while consistently measuring our results and processes against established gold standards. This commitment drives continuous improvement and ensures our patients receive the safest, most effective care available. Note that Riverside Smithfield Hospital has not yet been open long enough to apply for these recognitions but holds itself to the same standards as our other community hospitals.

DNV Certified Comprehensive and Primary Stroke Centers
At Riverside, patients have access to advanced technology and highly trained experts delivering the latest stroke treatments. Riverside Regional Medical Center is proud to be the only certified Comprehensive Stroke Center on the Virginia Peninsula, and one of the first in Virginia, offering specialized neurovascular services that allow patients to receive the most advanced, minimally invasive procedures available.

Not every stroke needs neurovascular intervention, and we are proud to have Riverside Doctors’ Hospital of Williamsburg, Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital and Riverside Walter Reed Hospital as certified Primary Stroke Centers providing exceptional assessment, diagnosis and medical management of stroke patients across the region.

Access to Leading Edge Technology and World Class Expertise Close to Home

Riverside Regional Medical Center provides advanced neurovascular care, offering minimally invasive procedures to remove blood clots or stop bleeding in the brain during a stroke. These same techniques can also help prevent strokes by treating conditions such as cerebral aneurysms before they rupture.

This neurovascular (or endovascular) approach uses catheters threaded through blood vessels in the groin or wrist to reach the brain, avoiding the need for open brain surgery. By treating the problem from inside the blood vessels, patients often experience faster recovery times, shorter hospital stays, and fewer complications.

Working to Prevent Strokes

At Riverside, we are committed to helping our neighbors lower their risk of stroke. Through community programs and events, we share practical tips on controlling high blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes, while encouraging healthy eating and quitting smoking. With primary care offices located throughout the region, we make it easier to manage your health close to home. You won’t have to travel far to receive ongoing care for chronic conditions, routine check-ups or preventative services.

Empowering People to Recognize Signs and Symptoms of Stroke

We believe knowledge saves lives. That’s why we partner with community groups, school districts, local cities and counties to teach people how to spot the signs or stroke and act quickly, so treatment can begin as soon as possible, giving people the best chance for recovery.
