Riverside Health System and UVA Health are partnering to expand consumer access to innovative care for complex medical conditions, transplants, and the latest clinical trials. Under the agreement, Riverside and UVA Health will be collaborating in multiple areas ranging from clinical program development, research, and medical education.  

The new strategic alliance promotes knowledge sharing, innovation, and growth for both health systems. Together, both organizations, our patients, residents and the communities we serve will benefit from the sharing of valuable resources, expertise, and best practices leading to enhanced access to quality care and optimal outcomes.  

Riverside and UVA Health are committed to providing high quality care for those in our communities and across Virginia. The collaborative alliance between both health systems will expand access to innovative care for complex medical conditions, advanced care and clinical trials to those in Eastern Virginia, close to their home. 

No, the guiding principle of the alliance is to keep care local. Our goal is to enhance services that are offered in Eastern Virginia. Sometimes travel to UVA Health may be necessary for specialized care such as transplantation. 

This is an evolutionary next step for health care in Eastern Virginia and across the state. To address the evolving health care landscape, Riverside and UVA Health recognize the value of a strategic alliance to expand access and improve patient outcomes, while growing each organizations respective capabilities. This is not a merger or acquisition – this affiliation benefits both health systems’ ongoing strategies.

The contractual agreement between UVA Health and Riverside is effective beginning Monday, July 10, 2023.

Under the new agreement, Riverside and UVA Health will collaborate in multiple areas ranging from clinical program development, research, and medical education.  

Initial priorities include: 

• Research – Expanding Riverside’s involvement to provide patients in Eastern Virginia with more opportunity to participate in and benefit from clinical trials. 
• Transplant – Building a seamless pre-transplant, transplant, post-transplant program with UVA Health and Riverside Medical Group. 
• Medical Education Program – Developing short- and long-term plans to train more students in both markets.  
• Cardiothoracic Surgery – Riverside and UVA Health will work together to enhance high quality, surgical care for cardiac and thoracic disease for those in Eastern Virginia. 

Additional programs and services are expected in the future. 

To ensure a long-term, mutually beneficial alliance, the agreement provides UVA Health with 5% ownership in Riverside, and in turn, UVA Health has committed to financial and clinical resources to assist in growing local services in Eastern Virginia. UVA Health and Riverside will each retain their existing governance and administrative structures. 

Riverside and UVA Health are continuing to develop detailed timelines regarding expanded services around our initial priorities. We will provide updates to our community as we have those timelines defined.
