Select Medical and Riverside Health Enter Joint Venture to Operate and Build Specialty Hospit

NEWPORT NEWS, VIRGINIA and MECHANICSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA –March 30, 2017 Riverside and Select Medical announced their plans to enter into a joint venture for the management and operations of both Hampton Roads Specialty Hospital, a long-term acute care hospital, and Riverside Rehabilitation Institute, an acute inpatient rehabilitation hospital. This partnership will help Riverside advance its long-term plan to relocate the rehabilitation institute to a new location in York County and to co-locate the long-term acute hospital to Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News.

"Riverside has been searching for a partner for these specialty, post-acute care services and we identified Select Medical because it is one of the leading providers in the nation and they share a similar mission as Riverside" stated Bill Downey, President/CEO of Riverside Health. "Select currently partners with 103 long-term acute hospitals and 20 rehabilitation hospitals nationally to include Emory Healthcare in Atlanta, Cleveland Clinic and Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, ranked as a top three rehabilitation hospital by U.S. News and World Report."

"We are honored to partner with Eastern Virginia's flagship medical system to ensure its communities have access to exceptional long-term acute care and inpatient rehabilitation services," said David S. Chernow, president and CEO, Select Medical. "Riverside Health and Select Medical share a common vision to uniquely serve the needs of complex chronically ill and catastrophically injured patients. Our collective track record of quality and outcomes will position the joint venture as the top choice for all levels of care in the region."

Under the deal, Riverside Health remains the majority owner of the 50-bed Riverside Rehabilitation Institute. Select Medical will be the majority owner of the 25-bed long-term acute care Hampton Roads Specialty Hospital and serve as managing partner of both hospitals. Upon the opening of the new inpatient rehabilitation facility, expected in early 2019, the long-term acute care hospital will relocate to Riverside Regional Medical Center.

"Select Medical is the premier partner to provide essential services such as long-term acute care and inpatient rehabilitation within our nationally recognized system," said Bill Downey. "We look forward to expanding our network and continuously improving safety, quality and outcomes for patients throughout our coastal communities –we call this the Riverside Care Difference".
