Neurosurgery

Our neurosurgical team performs many brain surgeries throughout the year, both with and without the use of multi-dimensional imaging navigation. We are currently the only hospital on the Virginia Peninsula with emergency cranial surgery capabilities.

Procedures we routinely perform

Craniotomy - This surgery involves opening the skull temporarily, allowing an operation to be performed on or around the underlying brain. The main reasons for this surgery are tumors, aneurysms, head injury and infection.

Deep brain stimulation - Deep brain stimulation involves implanting electrodes within certain areas of the brain. These electrodes produce electrical impulses that regulate abnormal impulses. DBS is used to treat a number of neurological conditions, including tremors (movement disorders), Parkinson's disease and dystonia.

Gamma Knife surgery - The Gamma Knife is the only technology in the world designed exclusively for radiosurgical (radiation) treatment of the brain. It is considered the "gold standard" for treating brain tumors.
