On Tuesday, September 12, 2023, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) authorized an updated Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 booster shot for 2023/2024. This new vaccine targets XBB.1.5 and has shown coverage for other circulating variants. For those and years and older, the vaccines are considered interchangeable, so you can mix-and-match vaccines brands. Riverside Health System will be offering the Pfizer-BioNTech 2023/2024 vaccine in various locations.
The new Pfizer-BioNTech 2023/2024 vaccine is approved for patients 12 years of age and older. The updated formulation can be administered if it has been at least two months since you have received a dose of any prior formulation of COVID-19 vaccine. Regardless of prior vaccination status, it is a one dose series for most individuals. For those individuals that are immunocompromised, a second dose may be required.
