Key Points

  • Molluscum contagiosum is a viral condition that leads to the development of small, smooth bumps on the skin that are typically painless.
  • It spreads through direct contact, contaminated objects or sexual contact.
  • The infection usually resolves on its own but can be treated with medications or minor procedures.

Overview

What is Molluscum Contagiosum?

Molluscum contagiosum is a common viral skin infection that leads to small, raised bumps on the skin. These bumps are typically painless and have a smooth, firm and dome-shaped appearance. The infection is caused by the molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV) and is most common in children, but it can also affect adults, especially those with weakened immune systems.

Causes

  • Direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person
  • Touching contaminated objects - such as towels, clothing or toys.
  • Sexual contact - if lesions are in the genital area.
  • Weakened immune system, which can make the infection more persistent

Is Molluscum Contagiosum Contagious?

Yes, molluscum contagiosum is contagious, spreading by the following methods:

  • Touching infected skin
  • Sharing personal items (e.g., towels, razors, gym equipment)
  • Scratching or picking at bumps, which can spread the virus to other areas of the skin

To prevent spreading, avoid scratching, wash hands regularly and keep affected areas covered.

Symptoms

Common Symptoms:

  • Small, round, flesh-colored bumps
  • Bumps may have a dimple or central core
  • Clusters of bumps appearing on arms, legs, torso or face
  • Itching or redness around the bumps (in some cases)
  • Inflammation or pus if bumps become irritated or infected

Treatment

Treatment of Molluscum Contagiosum

Most cases of molluscum contagiosum clear up on their own within 6-12 months, but treatment may be recommended for faster recovery or to prevent spreading.

  • Topical creams: Prescription medications can help reduce the bumps.
  • Cryotherapy (freezing the bumps): A quick procedure to remove lesions.
  • Laser therapy: An option for persistent cases.

When to See a Health Care Provider:

Consult a doctor if:

  • Bumps spread rapidly or cause discomfort.
  • The infection lasts longer than one year.
  • The bumps appear on the eyelids or genital area.
  • You have a weakened immune system.

Prevention

Preventing Molluscum Contagiosum

To lower the risk of infection:

  • Avoid touching or scratching bumps.
  • Wash hands regularly.
  • Keep affected areas covered with clothing or bandages.
  • Do not share personal items like towels or razors.
  • Use protection during sexual activity if lesions are in the genital area.
