Key Points

  • Laryngitis is the inflammation of the larynx, often leading to hoarseness or voice loss.
  • Can develop due to vocal strain, exposure to environmental irritants or underlying infections.
  • Treatment depends on the cause but may include rest, hydration and medications.

Overview

What is Laryngitis?

Laryngitis occurs when the larynx (voice box) becomes inflamed, leading to hoarseness or a temporary loss of voice. This condition can be acute (lasting a few days) or chronic (lasting longer than three weeks). Most cases are mild and improve on their own, but persistent symptoms may require medical attention.

Symptoms and Causes

Symptoms:

Common Symptoms of Laryngitis:

  • Hoarseness or weak voice
  • Sore throat
  • Dry or scratchy throat
  • Persistent cough
  • Mild fever (in some cases)
  • Difficulty swallowing

Causes:

Causes of Laryngitis:

  • Viral infections - such as colds or flu, which is the most common cause.
  • Bacterial infections - less common but may require antibiotics.
  • Voice strain - yelling, singing or talking for long periods.
  • Irritants - smoke, alcohol, allergens or pollution.
  • Gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) - stomach acid irritating the throat.

Is Laryngitis Contagious? How It Spreads and How to Protect Yourself

Laryngitis resulting from viral or bacterial infections may be contagious and can spread through droplets released when an infected individual coughs or sneezes. To reduce the risk, wash your hands frequently, avoid close contact with sick individuals and cover your mouth when coughing.

Diagnosis

How is Laryngitis Diagnosed?

Doctors typically diagnose laryngitis by evaluating symptoms and performing a physical exam. In some cases, they may use a laryngoscope to examine the vocal cords or recommend voice testing if symptoms persist.

Treatment

Laryngitis Treatment: How to Soothe Your Voice and When to See a Doctor

  • Rest your voice: Avoid excessive talking or whispering, which can strain the vocal cords further.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids to keep the throat moist and reduce irritation.
  • Use a humidifier: Moist air can soothe an inflamed throat.
  • Try box breathing: A relaxation technique that can help control breathing and ease throat tension.
  • Medications: Depending on the cause, doctors may recommend pain relievers, corticosteroids, or antibiotics (if bacterial).

When to See a Health Care Provider

Seek medical care if:

  • Symptoms last more than two weeks.
  • You experience difficulty breathing or swallowing.
  • You cough up blood or have severe throat pain.
  • You have recurring laryngitis episodes.
