Key Points

  • Hemorrhoids, sometimes referred to as piles, are enlarged veins located in the lower rectum or around the anus.
  • Common causes include straining during bowel movements, pregnancy and sitting for long periods.
  • Early treatment can prevent discomfort and complications.

Overview

What are Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are a common issue that can happen to anyone, no matter their age. They occur when veins in the rectum or anus become swollen, leading to discomfort, itching, or bleeding. Hemorrhoids can be internal or external, with symptoms ranging from mild irritation to more severe pain. With proper care, hemorrhoids are manageable and often improve with simple lifestyle changes.

Causes and Risk Factors

Causes:

Common Causes:

  • Straining during bowel movements.
  • Chronic constipation or diarrhea.
  • Prolonged sitting, especially on the toilet.
  • Pregnancy and childbirth.
  • Heavy lifting or other activities that increase pressure in the abdomen.

Risk Factors:

  • Adults aged 45 to 65 are more likely to develop hemorrhoids.
  • A diet low in fiber can increase the risk of constipation and straining.
  • Family history of hemorrhoids.

Symptoms

Symptoms of Hemorrhoids

  • Bright red blood during bowel movements.
  • Itching or irritation around the anus.
  • Swelling or a lump near the anus.
  • Pain or discomfort, especially when sitting or during bowel movements.
  • Mucus discharge or feeling of incomplete bowel evacuation.

Diagnosis

At Riverside, diagnosing hemorrhoids begins with a physical examination. For internal hemorrhoids, a doctor may use tools like an anoscope or proctoscope to inspect the rectum. Additional tests, such as a colonoscopy, may be recommended to rule out other conditions if bleeding is present.

Treatment

Non-Surgical Treatments:

  • To reduce pain and irritation from hemorrhoids, various over-the-counter products such as topical treatments and suppositories are available to relieve pain and itching.
  • Warm sitz baths to reduce swelling and irritation.
  • Incorporating more fiber and fluids in the daily diet.

Minimally Invasive Procedures:

  • Rubber band ligation to cut off blood flow to hemorrhoids.
  • Sclerotherapy to shrink hemorrhoids with an injected solution.
  • Infrared coagulation to remove hemorrhoidal tissue using heat.

Surgical Options:

  • Hemorrhoidectomy: Removal of large or severe hemorrhoids.
  • Stapled hemorrhoidopexy: A less painful option for treating prolapsed hemorrhoids.

Prevention

Preventive Measures

  • Eat a high-fiber diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
  • Exercise regularly to promote healthy digestion.
  • Avoid prolonged sitting, especially on the toilet.
