What is Peak Flow Testing?

A peak flow test is a quick, simple breathing test that measures how fast you can blow air out of your lungs. It is often done using a peak flow meter, a handheld device that helps monitor your breathing and detect changes in lung function—especially in people with asthma.

Why Is Peak Flow Testing Done?

Doctors recommend peak flow testing for several reasons, including:

• Monitoring asthma control and detecting early signs of worsening symptoms
• Evaluating how well asthma medications are working
• Identifying asthma triggers or patterns in breathing difficulty
• Helping patients and doctors make informed decisions about daily treatment or emergency care
  
  

Regular peak flow testing can help prevent asthma attacks and reduce the need for emergency visits by catching changes in lung function early.

Before the Test

There’s usually no special preparation required. However, for best results:

• Use the test at the same time each day (usually in the morning or evening)
• Avoid strenuous activity beforehand
• Follow your provider’s instructions if you’re using it to track medication response or asthma triggers

During the Test

• Stand or sit up straight to ensure full lung expansion
• Place the mouthpiece of the peak flow meter in your mouth, sealing your lips around it
• Take a deep breath, filling your lungs completely
• Blow out as hard and fast as you can in a single breath (preferably in one second)
• Note the number on the meter (this is your peak expiratory flow rate)
• Repeat the test three times and record the highest of the three readings
  
  

The entire process takes only a few minutes and can be done at home or in a clinical setting.

After the Test

• You can return to your normal activities immediately
• Record your reading in a peak flow diary or asthma action plan
• If your reading is lower than your normal or “personal best” range, follow your doctor’s instructions—this may include using a rescue inhaler or seeking medical attention

The peak flow test is extremely safe and has no known long-term risks. Because it requires a strong, fast breath, some people may feel:

• Mild coughing or wheezing during or after the test
• Lightheadedness, especially if repeated multiple times without rest

These side effects are usually temporary. If you feel dizzy or unwell, stop the test and rest before trying again.
