What Is COPD?

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a long-term lung disease that makes it hard to breathe. It includes conditions such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis, which damage the lungs and restrict airflow. Over time, COPD can limit your ability to perform daily activities and may lead to serious complications.

Although there is no cure, COPD is treatable, and with the right care, many people can manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life.

Who Is Affected?

COPD affects more than 16 million people in the United States, and millions more may have it without knowing. It typically affects:

• Adults over age 40
• People with a history of smoking
• Individuals exposed to pollutants or irritants over long periods

What Causes COPD?

COPD is usually caused by long-term exposure to substances that irritate and damage the lungs, most commonly cigarette smoke.

Risk Factors

Not Controllable

• Age (most common in people 40 and older)
• Genetics (such as alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency)

• Smoking (primary cause in 85–90% of cases)
• Secondhand smoke exposure
• Occupational exposure to dust, fumes, and chemicals

• People with long-term exposure to indoor pollutants, like biomass fuel used in cooking or heating
• Workers in industries with exposure to dust or fumes

How Can You Reduce Your Risk?

• Quit smoking or avoid secondhand smoke
• Limit exposure to indoor and outdoor air pollution
• Use protective gear at work if exposed to fumes or dust
• Stay up to date with vaccines (flu, pneumonia and COVID 19) to prevent infections

What Are the Symptoms of COPD?

Symptoms often develop slowly and worsen over time. Common symptoms include:

• Shortness of breath, especially during activity
• Chronic cough, often with mucus (smoker’s cough)
• Wheezing
• Chest tightness
• Fatigue
• Frequent respiratory infections
• Unintended weight loss in later stages

How is COPD Diagnosed?

Diagnosis starts with a discussion of your symptoms and a physical exam as well as reviewing medical history and exposure to risk factors.

Common Diagnostic Tests:

• Pulmonary Function Testing: This includes spirometry, which measures how much air you can inhale and exhale, and how quickly you can do it. It also includes Lung volume and diffusion studies to evaluate how well your lungs are working.
• Chest X-ray or Chest CT scan: Identifies lung damage from COPD and rules out other conditions.
• Arterial blood gas analysis: Measures oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in your blood. This test is typically done in advanced stages of COPD.
• Alpha-1 antitrypsin test: Checks for a rare genetic form of COPD.

How is COPD Treated?

While there’s no cure, COPD can be managed with a combination of treatments to reduce symptoms and improve breathing.

Lifestyle Changes

• Quit smoking (most important step)
• Exercise regularly to improve endurance
• Eat a healthy diet and maintain a healthy weight
• Avoid lung irritants and get vaccinated against respiratory illnesses
  
  

Devices

• Inhalers and nebulizers to open airways and reduce inflammation
• Oxygen therapy for people with low oxygen levels
• Portable oxygen concentrators and oxygen tanks for home or travel use
  
  

Medical Treatments

• Bronchodilators: Relax the muscles around airways
• Inhaled corticosteroids: Reduce inflammation
• Antibiotics: Treat flare-ups caused by infections
• Combination inhalers: Contain both bronchodilators and steroids
  
  

Surgical Options

• Endobronchial valve placement: Helps in collapsing the damaged lung portion so that the healthier portion of the lung can participate in breathing better
  
• Lung volume reduction surgery: Removes damaged lung tissue to improve airflow
• Lung transplant: For severe cases where other treatments have failed

• Pulmonary rehabilitation: Combines exercise, education, and support
