What is the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship?
The Riverside APP Fellowship is a 12-month postgraduate program designed to equip new nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) with advanced clinical training in a supportive, real-world environment. The program combines structured curriculum, hands-on experience, and mentorship to help APPs confidently transition into specialty practice.
Overview
- 12-month APP Fellowship in Critical Care
- Designed for new graduate Nurse practitioners with acute care certifications, Physician Assistants/Associates, or Acute Care Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) wishing to change specialties to Critical Care.
- Clinical rotations, simulation lab training, and critical care procedure boot camps are combined with formal and informal didactic sessions.
- Clinical rotations include majority of time spent in the Medical ICU, with additional rotations in Surgical ICU, cardiology, nephrology, neurology/neuro-intervention/stroke team, neurosurgery, pulmonary, gastroenterology, palliative care, internal medicine, infectious disease, cardiothoracic surgery, as well as elective rotations.
- Professional development opportunities with the completion of a formal Performance Improvement project throughout the year.
- Minimum 100 CME hours awarded for Fellowship completion.
Program Dates
- Applications open in January
- Interviews will be held in March
- Applicant selection will be made by April 30th
- Contracts presented to Fellow in May and June
- Credentialing process to begin as soon as Fellow is Board Certified
- Program start date: based on graduation date: August/September, or Oct/November
- Fellowship onboarding will coincide with a Riverside Medical Group Orientation Session
- Graduation date: one year from start of program
Curriculum
The fellowship curriculum blends structured education, simulation-based training, and clinical experience to build advanced expertise. Fellows participate in weekly didactic lectures, asynchronous modules, Critical Care Grand Rounds, and specialty training such as the Difficult Airways Course. Hands-on learning is reinforced through simulation labs, procedural practice, and multidisciplinary rounds. Each fellow also designs a quality improvement project, culminating in a formal presentation before graduation. Dedicated time for community service and wellness further supports professional growth and balance.
Goals of the Fellowship
- Prepare the novice APP with advanced education and skills above the level of formal education to provide and optimize quality safe care to complex critically ill adults.
- To demonstrate proficiencies in core competencies of their respective fellowships.
- Facilitate inter professional communication and collaboration within the health system.
- Cultivate leadership through participation in mentorship program and development of Quality Improvement initiatives.
Clinical Rotations
General onboarding and medical group orientation occurs at the Fellowship Initiation.
The majority of clinical training (>50%) will occur in the medical and surgical ICU's including procedural boot camp.
