Key Points

  • Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, is a common and contagious eye condition that causes redness, itching and discharge.
  • It can be caused by viruses, bacteria, allergies or irritants.
  • Some types of pink eye are highly contagious and can spread easily in schools and workplaces.
  • Most cases are mild and resolve on their own, but treatment may be needed depending on the cause.
  • Good hygiene, like washing hands and avoiding eye touching, helps prevent its spread.

Overview

What is Pink Eye?

Pink eye occurs when the conjunctiva, the thin membrane covering the white part of the eye, becomes inflamed. This can result from viral or bacterial infections, allergies, or irritants like smoke and chemicals. Viral pink eye is the most common type and often clears up on its own, while bacterial conjunctivitis may require antibiotic eye drops. Allergic pink eye is triggered by allergens like pollen or pet dander and is not contagious.

Causes and Risk Factors

You may be at higher risk if you:

  • Are in close contact with someone who has pink eye.
  • Frequently touch your eyes without washing your hands.
  • Wear contact lenses without proper hygiene.
  • Have seasonal allergies or are exposed to irritants like smoke or chlorine.

Symptoms

Symptoms of pink eye vary depending on the cause but may include:

  • Redness in one or both eyes.
  • Itching or burning sensation.
  • Watery or thick discharge, which may cause eyelids to stick together.
  • Swelling of the eyelids.
  • Sensitivity to light.
  • Gritty feeling in the eyes.

A health care provider can diagnose pink eye based on symptoms and a physical exam. In some cases, they may take an eye swab to determine if bacteria or a virus is causing the infection.

Treatments

Treatment for pink eye depends on its cause:

  • Viral pink eye: No specific treatment; symptoms usually clear up within 1-2 weeks. Applying a cool compress and using artificial tears can help relieve discomfort.
  • Bacterial pink eye: May require antibiotic eye drops or ointments to shorten the infection.
  • Allergic pink eye: Treated with antihistamine eye drops and avoiding allergens.
  • Irritant pink eye: Rinsing the eyes with clean water and avoiding further exposure to irritants helps relieve symptoms.

Prevention

The best way to prevent pink eye is through proper hygiene:

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water.
  • Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes.
  • Do not share personal items like towels, makeup, or contact lenses.
  • Clean and disinfect eyeglasses and contact lenses properly.
  • If you have pink eye, stay home from school or work until symptoms improve.

Next Steps

You should see a health care provider if:

  • Symptoms do not improve within a few days.
  • Eye pain, swelling, or vision problems develop.
  • There is a large amount of yellow or green discharge.
  • You have a weakened immune system or wear contact lenses.

If you or your child have symptoms of pink eye, schedule an appointment with a health care provider. Proper hygiene and early treatment can help prevent spreading the infection.
