Leader in detecting lung cancer early

At Riverside, we know early detection is everything. That’s why we have built a system-wide program to find lung cancer at the earliest stages, when treatment is most effective and survival rates are dramatically higher.

Our low dose CT (LDCT) lung screening program is embedded in our primary care practices and is available to patients who meet criteria based on age and smoking history. Our program identifies patients who are eligible for this life-saving screening.

If a lung nodule is discovered on LDCT or found incidentally in any imaging study performed our diagnostic and imaging centers, emergency department or hospital stay, our radiologists flag any concerning nodule for referral to our Lung Nodule Clinic.

Patients receive rapid access to Riverside’s Lung Nodule Clinic in approximately one week, where our expert pulmonologists evaluate and determine next steps, reducing anxiety and eliminating delays in care.

Advanced diagnostics that guide personalized care

Riverside’s diagnostic capabilities are some of the most advanced in the region, helping us to access the smaller, hard-to-reach lung nodules with extraordinary precision and care.

We offer Robotic Navigational Bronchoscopy. This advanced technology allows us to biopsy nodules in all 18 segments of the lung precisely, safely and minimally invasively. This technology allows us to identify lung cancer earlier, improving survival rates by informing treatment decisions at the earliest point.

From PET, CT and MRI for staging to endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) and mediastinoscopy for lymph node evaluation and molecular testing for targeted therapy selection, every diagnostic step is guided by a multidisciplinary team of lung cancer experts and the latest NCCN scientific evidence.

Patients benefit from our collaborative approach where lung cancer experts across pulmonology, thoracic surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, pathology, nursing and others come together with collective expertise to determine what treatment types would be most effective for you. Complex cases may be presented at a multidisciplinary tumor board.

Surgery
Surgery

  • Minimally invasive robotic thoracic surgery offers less invasive lung cancer resections
  • Lymph node sampling to establish staging

SABR
Single Anesthesia Bronchoscopy and Resection (SABR)

SABR is an advanced approach where diagnosis and surgery are completed in one seamless procedure under a single anesthesia event. The lung region that needs to be resected is marked during the bronchoscopy by your pulmonologist and then affected lung is resected by your thoracic surgeons under single anesthesia.

Radiation Therapy
Radiation Therapy

  • Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT): Delivers high-dose radiation to small tumors with minimal damage to surrounding lung tissue
  • Image-Guided and Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IGRT/IMRT)
  • Respiratory Gating Techniques to account for tumor movement during breathing C-Rad, SGRT

Cancer Medication
Cancer Drugs

Chemotherapy or immunotherapy may be part of your treatment plan. Cancer drugs can be used in combination with other treatments, such as with surgery or radiation. Your cancer care team will recommend the timing and duration of this therapy. Some patients who are not candidates for surgery may only have chemotherapy and/ or immunotherapy as part of their treatment plan.

Riverside leads the way in Lung Cancer Early Detection

Riverside exceeds national and state early lung cancer detection rates. This is significant given the striking difference in outcomes when lung cancer is detected early.

Your primary care provider can refer you for a Low Dose CT to screen for lung cancer if you are between the ages of 50 and 80 and have a significant smoking history. Should anything be found, our dedicated lung nodule clinic provides expedited evaluation by an expert pulmonologist, so you receive the timely care you deserve.
