Dr. Valaik is a fellowship-trained and board-certified hip and knee total joint replacement orthopedic surgeon. He joined Riverside Health from The John Hopkins School of Medicine. He served as the regional chief of the Johns Hopkins National Capital Region Orthopaedic Surgery division and held multiple leadership positions at Johns Hopkins Suburban Hospital, earning both Surgeon of the Year and the Clinical Excellence Award in 2019. Dr. Valaik aims to establish Riverside Health as the leader in joint replacement surgery in Hampton Roads.

He earned his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences before completing his residency at National Naval Medical Center and a total joint replacement fellowship at Johns Hopkins. Board certified in orthopedic surgery, Dr. Valaik has spent his career teaching the principles of orthopedic surgery and building highly successful orthopedic teams throughout his distinguished career.

A former Navy SEAL and diving medical officer, he is a highly decorated U.S. Navy veteran. From 2005–2009, he had the distinction of serving as the Chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery at Walter Reed and was the orthopedic consultant to Congress in Washington, D.C. Dr. Valaik considers it his “highest calling” to have had the privilege to care for hundreds of wounded warriors with severe orthopedic injuries from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Dr. Valaik has been an active member of many medical societies and committees, is a prolific lecturer and has co-authored numerous original research publications. He brings a long track record of applying innovative techniques and a multidisciplinary approach to ensure the best patient outcomes.

Originally from Buffalo, New York, he is pleased to be returning to the Virginia Beach area where he has fond memories from his time in the Navy. He is married to the “girl next door” from his childhood, has four daughters and looks forward to enjoying the area’s many water sports and activities in his spare time.
