Aquatic therapy

If you've ever moved your arms, legs, hands or feet in water, you may already know how aquatic therapy can enhance the quality of physical movement and activity. Sometimes called pool therapy or hydrotherapy - or just shortened a bit to aqua therapy - aquatic therapy includes various forms of exercise that take place in a warm water pool. The therapy uses the natural properties of water to make movement easier and less painful for people who are recovering from injuries or have chronic conditions like arthritis or partial paralysis. Aquatic therapy can:

Dry needling therapy

Dry needling is a pain relief technique that is being used more and more. It involves inserting very fine needles into the skin to help ease the pain of a "trigger point" or spasm in the muscle. The trigger points, which some people call "muscle knots" or "nodules," are caused by hypersensitive, tight bands of muscle fiber.

They can disrupt normal function, restrict range of motion, cause local soreness or stiffness and refer pain to other parts of the body. The term "dry" refers to the fact that the needle does not inject any medication like a hypodermic needle or have any medicinal coating.

Hand therapy

Hand therapy is a specialized form of rehabilitation that focuses on injuries and other conditions related to the hands and upper extremities. Riverside physical therapists or occupational therapists with advanced training, ongoing education and clinical experience offer a range of treatments and interventions designed to help patients regain function and return to a more active and productive lifestyle. Although they provide a noninvasive, nonsurgical treatment, our hand therapists can also be an important part of the continuum of care following hand, wrist, elbow, arm or shoulder surgery.

Lymphedema therapy

Riverside provides lymphedema therapy through physical therapists and occupational therapists who are specially trained and experienced in lymphedema management. Lymphedema is a medical condition in which extra lymph fluid builds up in tissues and causes swelling. For most people, lymphedema is a chronic, sometimes lifelong, condition. But the good news is that while lymphedema, especially in its later stages, can't be completely reversed, it can be effectively managed with proactive strategies and interventions. The goals of lymphedema therapy focus on reducing pain and discomfort, improving movement and avoiding the complications that can be associated with the condition.

Parkinson's LSVT BIG and LOUD therapy

LSVT BIG and LOUD, named for Lee Silverman Voice Treatments, are speech-language, physical and occupational therapies designed for people in all stages of Parkinson's disease. Both evidence-based therapies can also be used with other neurological conditions including stroke, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy and Down syndrome. On the most basic level, LSVT BIG helps people with PD improve their mobility while also enhancing a variety of activities of daily living. LSVT LOUD was developed to help individuals with PD improve their speech control and overall communication abilities.

Pelvic Floor Therapy

As a specialized form of physical therapy, pelvic floor therapy treats the underlying muscle problems related to pelvic floor dysfunction. For many people, it can be an effective alternative to other approaches of care or can be used in conjunction with treatments such as surgery, medical devices and medication.

Sports physical therapy

Sports Physical Therapy is part of an extensive, integrated program at Riverside that includes a credentialed physical therapy sports residency program as well as orthopedic surgeons, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and athletic trainers who specialize in helping our more active members of the community get back to the activities they enjoy as quickly and safely as possible following an injury. Our sports physical therapists are an important part of these comprehensive services and have either a strong focus or a certification in sports medicine. Each one also has personal and clinical knowledge of the special biomechanical and psychological challenges related to sports.

Vestibular therapy

Vestibular therapy is an exercise-based program designed to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life for people experiencing dizziness, vertigo and imbalance. These conditions originate in the vestibular system, a collection of structures in the inner ear and brain. Vestibular therapy can help reduce both the fear and risk of falling, decrease dizziness and vertigo symptoms, improve balance (and your level of confidence in maintaining balance), increase body strength and help you gain an overall improvement in movement and function.
