Emergency Rooms provide around-the-clock care for a range of health concerns – from broken bones and pneumonia to heart attacks or strokes. But those with the most severe, life-threatening injuries often require the care of a specialized trauma center.

Designated trauma centers are staffed with specialists trained to treat high-risk injuries including severe burns, gunshot or stab wounds, brain injuries, and other bodily trauma from car crashes to extreme falls.

What does a trauma center offer?

All licensed and certified trauma centers across the country provide access to specialized trauma nurses and physicians. Standardized Advanced Trauma Life Support protocols are immediately enacted so that appropriate lifesaving interventions are administered without delay.

Why trauma centers matter

Riverside Regional Medical Center is home to the only accredited trauma center serving the Virginia Peninsula.

As the region’s dedicated trauma center, Riverside delivers 24/7 access to lifesaving care for more than 3,000 patients a year who’ve experienced a sudden, catastrophic injury.

Our trauma center has specialists in every area of medicine – from orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery and plastic surgery to heart surgery, critical care and more.

Because of this expertise, we are able to provide lifesaving care for even the most serious trauma cases, from intake through rehabilitation.

“We have specialists on staff to treat basically any injury that you can imagine, at a moment’s notice,” says Daniel D. Munn, M.D.Riverside Regional Medical Center’s Chief of Surgery and Director of Trauma. “Our team is well equipped to quickly address any trauma situation in order to stabilize and save the lives of our patients.”
