Snoring is a common condition and loud and frequent snoring may be more than just a nuisance; it may be the sign of a sleep condition known as sleep apnea. If a member of your family or household tells you that you snore loudly and seem to gasp for air while you sleep, talk to your primary care physician. He or she may recommend a sleep study at one of the Riverside Centers for Sleep Medicine to determine if there is an underlying cause of your snoring.

Sleep problems in children

Children and young adults can also be affected by sleep issues:

  • Bedwetting
  • Sleepwalking
  • Nightmares
  • Night terrors

Adults can also experience sleepwalking.

Hypersomnia is characterized by recurrent episodes of excessive daytime sleepiness or prolonged nighttime sleep. Different from feeling tired due to lack of or interrupted sleep at night, persons with hypersomnia are compelled to nap repeatedly during the day, but these naps provide no relief. Hypersomnia may be caused by another sleep disorder such as narcolepsy or sleep apnea, dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system, or drug or alcohol abuse. In some cases it results from a physical problem, medications or disease.
