The opening of the Pavilion marked an important milestone in Riverside Regional Medical Center's campus-wide transformation from a community hospital to a true regional medical center whose quality outcomes have earned national recognition.

The Pavilion is a 250,000 sq. ft., 3-story addition to Riverside Regional Medical Center that includes many features including: new operating room suites; endoscopy suite; 72 private patient rooms arranged in four wings; central sterile processing; pharmacy; and related services. It officially opened January 28, 2013, at a cost of approximately $107 million. The Pavilion features the latest in design with the delivery of the hallmarks of the Riverside Care Difference: Keep me safe. Help heal me. Respect my wishes. Be kind to me. According to Dr. Pat Parcells, Administrator of Riverside Regional Medical Center at the time of the opening: "The loving, caring, high-quality care is going to be the same… but it is going to be streamlined, and the ambience and the family experience is going to be much enhanced."

The original Riverside hospital moved to the current location on J. Clyde Morris Boulevard in the early 1960s. Like any structure, the building needed typical renovations. Perhaps more importantly, the design and construction embraces the 'wired' world of health care today, and  accounts for the dramatic growth in outpatient services.

The location of the long-standing hospital, central to the Virginia Peninsula, makes it convenient for citizens throughout the Peninsula and surrounding area to access our services. Our proximity to major roads like Jefferson Avenue, Warwick Boulevard, J. Clyde Morris Boulevard/Rt. 17, and Interstate 64 make our medical center easy to find. This is especially important in the case of medical emergencies.

During the downturn in the economy, the decision to move forward with construction was made because prices were lower as workers were available. The funding for these construction projects (capital projects) does not come from operating costs (everyday supplies, salaries, overhead). Through sound financial management, Riverside leaders have been able to set aside funds so that we can re-invest in new equipment and upgrades like this when needed. This ensures that our community receives quality care without interruption.

Over the years, extensive changes have taken place on the Riverside Regional Medical Center campus. We've completed renovations of the 5 West Oncology Unit, the Women and Infant Care areas, Main Lobby, Annex Lobby, Intensive Care Unit, and Coronary Care Unit. The elevator tower, just off the Main Lobby, provided a welcome avenue for patients and guests to reach services on the upper floors. We built the Peninsula Surgery Center, Cancer Care Center, Medical Office Building, and the new Emergency / Trauma Center. Our new multi-story parking deck for employee parking provides easier access to more parking spaces for patients and guests. The exterior of Riverside Regional Medical Center received a 'face-lift' that included energy efficient cladding and windows. Even the landscaping and grounds received a fresh and attractive design that has earned us several community awards for beauty over multiple years. We made it easier for those coming to our campus to locate the right entrances for their needs by installing additional signs, including the electronic message boards on J. Clyde Morris and Warwick Boulevards.

The transformation of Riverside Regional Medical Center extends beyond simply the renovations and newly-constructed buildings. It includes ongoing scrutiny of every service, process and practice to insure that we are delivering evidence-based care which results in best outcomes. Ours is a complete transformation from the outside to the inside and the results are raising the bar of quality and service for our community. Riverside Regional Medical Center has earned recognition from Joint Commission for two consecutive years (one of only 244 hospitals nationwide); from Leapfrog for having the highest quality score in Virginia; and from US News & World Report for receiving #1 ranking on the Peninsula and #2 in our entire region. Riverside Regional Medical Center was also named among the Top 50 Cardiovascular Centers in the country (one of only 2 in the entire Southeast) for delivering the highest quality at the lowest cost.  We've moved from average quality to superior quality that prompts long-time customers to say "It's really changed. I can't believe what a difference there is."

We let the foundational elements of the Riverside Care Difference -- safety, healing, kindness, and respect -- guide us in all decisions during the Pavilion design. We chose colors to enhance healing, provided more privacy with physical wall rather than curtains. The rooms are larger for family members' and visitors' comfort--they are important to the healing process. We selected hands-free faucets, soap dispensers and provider wash stations to maintain a more sterile environment. Slip-resistant flooring, handrails, non-glare diffused lighting and other elements support safety as one of our core values.

We took an extraordinary amount of time planning systems that connect in a seamless and meaningful way to streamline care. Our goal was to allow our care team to spend as much time as possible in patient care, not on computer terminals. Monitors in patient rooms are fully integrated with the electronic medical record, the nurse call system, staff and equipment locators, pharmacy and more. We designed systems that allow nurses and other caregivers to move from room to room and log in with a tap of their badge and pin number. All of the information they need to deliver quality, evidence-based care is available immediately, along with safeguards. Nearly every aspect of care, from special beds, phone capabilities and temperature control is guided by integrated computer technology for the patients' benefit.

As we've done over the years, we continue to evolve our services to meet the needs of the community and the changing health care landscape. For example, when our Orthopedics Unit on the fifth floor of the Annex moved to the Pavilion, we renovated to create what is called an ACE Unit, an area specially designed and staffed to care for the frail and elderly. We're always looking ahead and planning new ways to deliver excellence for our community. That's why Riverside Regional Medical Center remains the region's leading referral facility.

Our Riverside Care Difference is the way in which we deliver care and services -- as a team - by putting our patients and customers at the heart of all we do in terms of Safety, Quality, and Service. It's about addressing what our customers have told us they want:

  • Keep me safe
  • Help heal me
  • Be kind to me
  • Respect my wishes

We all aspire to fulfill our Mission through lasting relationships built on trust: To care for others as we would care for those we love - to enhance their well-being and improve their health.
