17th Annual Stroke Symposium

The 17th Annual Stroke Symposium will be held on Friday, May 1, 2026, from 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (registration and breakfast 6:30 - 7:30 a.m.) at the Newport News Marriott at City Center. Please join us for a day focused on the latest advances in caring for stroke patients.

For your comfort, we recommend bringing layers to the conference. Temperature fluctuations in the event space may vary, and dressing in layers will help ensure you stay comfortable throughout the day.

To differentiate pre-hospital stroke identification tools and triage algorithms, including large vessel occlusion (LVO) screening scales, and apply appropriate destination decision-making principles to optimize time to reperfusion.

To apply evidence-based emergency department protocols for acute stroke management, including imaging selection, thrombolytic eligibility assessment, and blood pressure management, to improve door-to-needle and door-to-groin times.

To evaluate current guideline-directed treatment strategies for acute ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, including mechanical thrombectomy and neurointerventional techniques, to determine appropriate patient selection and escalation of care.

To assess the role of advanced technologies and artificial intelligence in stroke care, including AI-assisted imaging interpretation and telestroke platforms, and integrate these tools into clinical workflow to enhance decision-making and efficiency.

To implement interdisciplinary inpatient and post-acute care strategies, including dysphagia screening, early mobilization, rehabilitation therapies, and secondary prevention measures, to improve functional outcomes and reduce readmissions.

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by the UVA Health Continuing Education and Riverside Health. UVA Health Continuing Education is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
