Our APP Fellowship FAQs are designed to give you a clear picture of what to expect from the program. From curriculum structure and specialty rotations to application requirements, benefits, and career opportunities, this section answers the most common questions candidates ask before applying.
- 12-month structured training program tailored to new graduate APPs entering into critical care. The fellowship follows a critical care focused competency curriculum including hands-on learning in our state-of-the-art SIM lab, weekly didactic lectures, and process improvement/leadership projects driven by fellows.
Both programs are 12 months in length but have a different focus area. The Acute Care Fellowship is designed to provide focused exposure to multiple different areas of the acute care environment. Based on individual interest, rotation length c an be adjusted to allow a more tailored clinical exposure. Both programs focus on high acuity patient care and decision making with opportunities for hand on procedural practice.
- For the Critical Care Fellowship: The majority of the clinical hours will be spent in the critical care units (MICU, SICU) with subspecialty rotations including electives.
- For the Acute Care Fellowship: Clinical time dedicated to Hospital/Internal Medicine, with longer rotations in sub specialty areas designed to increase exposure and competencies.
- There will be protected didactic sessions built into each week, including live webinar lectures, asynchronous modules, and time dedicated to a process improvement or research project.
- Core Subspecialty rotations include cardiology, nephrology, neurosciences, pulmonary, gastroenterology, palliative care, internal medicine, infectious disease, urology and cardiothoracic surgery.
- Elective rotations are chosen by the fellow.
- The Riverside Simulation Training Lab is a state of the art 8400 square foot SIM lab which has 4 dedicated clinical areas including Medical/Surgical/Intensive Care Ward, Labor & Delivery Room, Emergency Medicine/Trauma Bay, and a Procedural Skills Suite.
- Fellowship will begin with a Boot Camp Skills training session. Additionally, throughout the fellowship proctored bedside procedures will be incorporated.

- Work weeks will vary based on rotations. In order to maximize learning opportunities, the fellow should anticipate 8-10 hour days depending on specialty rotation.
- Weekly didactic time built into program
- Schedules will vary based on rotation and may include a combination of days, evening, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Based upon the hospital needs and availability, fellows may be offered a position based upon fellowship performance.
- Fellows should consider this opportunity as a year-long interview.
- Newly graduated Nurse Practitioners with Acute Care Certification and Physician Assistants/Associates who are motivated and interested in a career in critical care.
- Experienced PA's and acute care certified Nurse Practitioners who are interested in a career change to critical care.
- There will be a $72,000 stipend annually
- 100 CME hours via THRIVE AP
- Additional specialized training (ACLS, SIM Lab: Procedural Boot Camp, Difficult Airway Course)
- Didactic lectures
- Malpractice insurance, DEA license reimbursement
- 3 weeks of PTO
- Scrubs provided
- Laptop provided for fellow utilization during fellowship year
- One of the goals of the Critical Care APP Fellowship Program is to train and retain the APP fellow to become RMG provider. All fellows will be required to interview for open positions after the fellowship.
- There is no post graduate work requirement.
