When you receive a cancer diagnosis, developing a treatment plan for you is our priority. Surgery, chemotherapy and radiation are often the first things that come to mind when you hear “cancer treatment plan.” But our cancer program also provides options for supporting your mind, body and spirit.

Integrative medicine supports you during treatment and after

“Integrative medicine at Riverside brings together complementary therapies with leading-edge cancer treatment. These evidence-based therapies focus on the whole person — body, mind and spirit — not just fighting the disease,” says Greg Germon, music therapist with Riverside Cancer Care.

Integrative medicine has improved the quality of life for many people. It’s offered at leading cancer centers around the world, including the Riverside Cancer Care Centers.

What are the components of integrative cancer care?

Integrative cancer care includes a variety of services to support your mental and physical wellness. Services can stand alone or be combined. They all work to support your care plan and may include:

  • Nutrition
  • Massage
  • Yoga
  • Music
  • Pet therapy
  • Palliative care

“Palliative care is a subspecialty of medicine that provides medical, emotional and social support to patients and families. Palliative care often involves managing symptoms such as fatigue, appetite, constipation and pain to improve how you are feeling during treatment,” says Germon.

Many specialists, one team

The integrative medicine team includes many specialists, each dedicated to supporting people’s health and healing. The team includes:

  • Certified oncology nurses
  • Palliative care coordinators
  • Certified massage therapists
  • Certified lymphedema therapist
  • Registered yoga instructor
  • Registered dietitian
  • Music therapy coordinator
  • Pet therapy providers

“Integrative medicine complements traditional cancer therapy to offer optimal support of the mind and body. Everyone on the team is dedicated to supporting our patients as they go through treatment.” Says Germon.

If you are dealing with a cancer diagnosis, integrative medicine may be a possibility. Make sure to discuss all available therapies with your oncologist to make an informed decision.
