About Romney Christian Andersen, MD

Dr. Andersen is a fellowship trained orthopedic trauma surgeon with extensive experience in both military and civilian settings. He deployed to combat as the Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at Ibn Sina Hospital and Theater Consultant for Orthopaedics in Bagdad, Iraq from 2008 to 2009. Prior to his retirement, he served as the Director of Orthopaedic Trauma at the National Naval Medical Center, Director of Orthopaedic Trauma at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Vice Chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery. He was the first Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center when the former National Naval Medical Center and the Walter Reed Army Medical Center combined.

Holding an academic rank of Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Dr Andersen has authored or co-authored over 100 publications.

Dr. Andersen's academic interests lie in caring for the combat injured casualty. He was the Primary Investigator of the Military Extremity Trauma Amputation vs. Limb Salvage (METALS) study at Walter Reed investigating the differences between outcomes of severe limb injury. He is the Orthopaedic Extremity Trauma Research Program (OETRP) grant recipient and Primary Investigator for the Global War on Terrorism Open Tibia Study, and is a member of the Major Extremity Trauma Research Consortium (METRC). He is a founding member of the Extremity War Injuries (EWI) Symposia and involved in the program every year, serving as co-chair from 2012-2014 and Scientific Director in 2015. He currently acts as chair of the Peer-Reviewed Orthopaedic Research Program (PRORP) steering committee.

An esteemed colonel in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, Dr. Andersen holds numerous awards and badges from over three decades of military service. Outside of work he can be found spending time on the James River with his wife, Melissa, and their two boys.
