About James Kevin O'Brien, MD

Dr. O'Brien is a fellowship-trained, board-certified cardiologist with more than 30 years of experience in outpatient and hospital settings as well as noninvasive techniques. He excels at diagnosing and treating cardiovascular conditions including heart failure, coronary heart disease, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, arrhythmia, hypertensive disorders, pericardial disease and cardiomyopathies. Dr. O'Brien believes in not only keeping patients fully informed about their diagnoses, condition, prognosis, treatment options and recommendations, but being ready to support their individual choices.

After earning his medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine, he completed an internal medicine residency and a cardiology fellowship at Albany Medical Center in New York.

For Dr. O'Brien, caring runs in the family. His father, an internal medicine physician who operated a private practice for 50 years, initially inspired him to pursue cardiology. Shortly after completing his fellowship, Dr. O'Brien followed in his father's footsteps. For more than 20 years, he practiced general cardiology at the O'Brien Health Center in his hometown of Winooski, Vermont.

Before joining Riverside Cardiology Specialists, Dr. O'Brien was the director of cardiovascular services at UHS Cardiology-Norwich at Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich, New York. During his 10 years there, he also served as medical staff president from 2014-2015.

Married with five adult children, Dr. O'Brien enjoys golf, pickleball, boating, skiing, photography and playing Bridge in his leisure time. He is also interested in the rich culture and history of our region.

The physician was a courteous no nonsense person. He was a good listener and I was quickly informed that our visit would be recorded on his cell phone with permission. And indeed, much of what took place during the visit did make it's way to his well documented notes on the visit. At one point however, I did feel awkward when he corrected me twice on a medical term. I was able to have a medication renew even before I left the exam room. My concern for the visit was not relieved but there is a follow up visit in 3 months time.

This was possibly the best interaction I have had with a doctor in many years. He took his time, did a great job of explaining thihngs. I've been on Xarelto for more than ten years, and his was the best explanation of how that drug works that I have ever had

Dr. O'Brien was very pleasant and respectful. He took a focused, but extensive history related to my problem and then conducted an exam. After reviewing my lab tests, echocardiogram, EKG, history and conducting his exam, he explained what he believed to be the problem. He also discussed management options and answered my questions. I left feeling very comfortable with our discussion and his recommendations.
