About Benjamin Andrew Bortner, MD

Benjamin A. Bortner, M.D., is a cardiologist who cares for patients with coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular disease, hypertension and heart arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation.  He is fellowship trained in cardiology and board certified in internal medicine, echocardiography and nuclear cardiology. Dr. Bortner offers advanced cardiac imaging and stress testing to guide diagnosis and treatment.

After earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Crime, Law and Justice at Pennsylvania State University in University Park, Pennsylvania, Dr. Bortner earned his medical degree at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He completed an internal medicine residency at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina, and a cardiology fellowship at Carilion Clinic in Roanoke.

What draws Dr. Bortner to cardiology is the depth of evidence behind many treatment decisions. As the research grows and evolves, it helps him to keep learning new guidelines and treatments to best care for his patients. He takes a patient-centered, collaborative approach, recognizing that no single path fits every patient, and takes the time to find the right plan for each person he treats.

Born and raised in Durham, North Carolina, Dr. Bortner enjoys watching sports, playing outside with his wife, kids and dog, traveling, cooking and trying new restaurants, especially the local seafood.
