Low-dose Radiation Therapy for Osteoarthritis

Low-dose radiation therapy (LDRT) is a gentle, non-surgical treatment that can help reduce pain and swelling caused by arthritis. It uses very small amounts of radiation to calm joint inflammation and help you move more comfortably.

Who may benefit from low-dose radiation therapy?

LDRT may be a good choice for people who:

  • Still have joint pain after trying medicines, physical therapy or injections
  • Cannot take certain pain drugs (like NSAIDs)
  • Want to delay or avoid surgery for now

Treatment Duration

The treatment is given in six short sessions over two to three weeks. Most people have little to no side effects, and it does not make you feel sick or tired.

It’s important to know

This treatment does not repair or replace a worn-out joint. But for many people, it can lessen pain and stiffness for months or even years, sometimes helping them postpone surgery until a later time.
