Accreditations and Quality
Why is choosing a cancer center with accreditations important for you or your loved one?
Selecting a cancer center with nationally recognized and respected accreditations means you are choosing a cancer center where you will find:
- Access to comprehensive treatments and services that are coordinated and integrated across the health system
- A multidisciplinary approach to care where cancer experts work collaboratively together with an integrated support service team to bring you comprehensive care
Why does Riverside Cancer Care Network pursue accreditations?
We value the meticulous standards that are needed to obtain accreditation. This matters to us because we know this means we are:
- Holding our cancer care network to the highest standards of safety, quality, and patient-centered care for you
- Focusing on continuous improvement
- Ensuring you are at the center of your care and the focus of everything we do
Integrated Network Cancer Program (INCP) by the Commission on Cancer
Riverside Cancer Care Network has received national accreditation as an Integrated Network Cancer Program from the Commission on Cancer (COC), a quality program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). To earn COC accreditation, a cancer program must meet a number of COC quality care standards, be evaluated every three years through a survey process, and maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patient-centered care.
The CoC Accreditation Program provides the framework for Riverside Cancer Care Network to improve its quality of patient care through various cancer-related programs that focus on the full spectrum of cancer care including prevention, early diagnosis, cancer staging, optimal treatment, rehabilitation, life-long follow-up for recurrent disease, and end-of-life care. When patients receive care at a CoC accredited facility, they also have access to information on clinical trials and new treatments, genetic counseling, patient centered services including psycho-social support and a patient navigation process.
Riverside Cancer Care Network maintains a cancer registry and contributes data to the National Cancer Data Base (NCDB), a joint program of the CoC and American Cancer Society. This nationwide oncology outcomes database is the largest clinical disease registry in the world. Data on all types of cancer are tracked and analyzed through the NCDB and used to explore trends in cancer care. CoC-accredited cancer centers, in turn, have access to information derived from this type of data analysis, which is used to create national, regional, and state benchmark reports. These reports help CoC facilities to monitor performance internally and comparatively with facilities across the country.
National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC)
Riverside Cancer Care Network has earned accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a quality program administered by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and was among the first in Virginia to become NAPBC accredited (2009). To achieve voluntary NAPBC accreditation, a breast center must demonstrate compliance with the NAPBC standards that address a center’s leadership, clinical services, research, community outreach, professional education, and quality improvement for patients.
As a NAPBC-accredited center, Riverside Cancer Care Network is committed to maintaining levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive, patient-centered, multidisciplinary care resulting in high-quality care for patients with breast disease. Patients can be confident that their breast care team includes health care professionals from a variety of disciplines who are committed to working together to provide the best care available through their entire course of treatment. Patients receiving care at a NAPBC-accredited center also have access to information on clinical trials and new treatment options, genetic counseling, and patient-centered services including psychosocial support, rehabilitation services, and survivorship care.
Accreditation by the NAPBC is granted only to those programs that are committed to providing the best possible care to patients with breast cancer. Patients receiving care at this NAPBC-accredited center have access to:
- comprehensive care, including a full range of state-of-the-art services
- a multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best treatment options
- information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options
Accreditation Program for Excellence (APEx) in Radiation Oncology
The Riverside Cancer Care Network is accredited by the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) through APEx - Accreditation Program for Excellence. APEx is an accreditation program developed by ASTRO that validates a radiation oncology facility’s excellence in delivering high-quality patient care.
Accreditation through APEx is a voluntary and rigorous multi-step process during which a facility’s practices are evaluated using consensus-based standards. A facility must demonstrate its safety and quality processes and that it adheres to patient-centered care by promoting effective communication, coordinated treatments and strong patient engagement. Our facility has demonstrated those processes and continues to engage them in our patients’ care.
Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI) Certification in Medical Oncology
The Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI®) Certification Program through the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) provides a three-year certification recognizing high-quality care for outpatient hematology-oncology practices within the United States. Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI®) Certified Practices can routinely evaluate practice performance against quality measures and standards established by experts in the oncology field. The certification process creates a culture of excellence and self-examination that helps practices deliver the best care to their patients. By becoming QOPI Certified, a practice demonstrates its commitment to quality to patients, payors, and the medical community.
Being certified in QOPI has elevated our practice to the highest possible level of quality and safety while continuously evaluating performance to ensure we are practicing best practices.
Riverside Cancer Care Network is the first in Hampton Roads to achieve and maintain QOPI certification.
