Expectant Parents Tours: Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News
Parents-to-be can preview the private rooms at Riverside Regional Medical Center during our weekly Expectant Parents Tours. You will be able to meet team members and ask questions about having your baby at Riverside. The free tour lasts about an hour and an appointment is required. Please limit attendance to mom-to-be and one support person. Meet the group in the Tower Lobby.

Expectant Parents Tour: Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital, Onancock
Parents-to-be can preview the private maternal/child health rooms at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital with a private tour. You will be able to meet your team members and ask questions about having your baby at Riverside. The free tour lasts about an hour, and an appointment is needed. Make your appointment by calling 757-302-2440.

Big Brothers & Big Sisters Tour: Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News
For brothers- and sisters-to-be, this presentation is held on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month, at the same time as the Expectant Parents Tour. The Big Brothers and Big Sisters program includes a sibling video (age appropriate) and demonstration of taking care of the new baby and a tour of where mother and baby will stay while in the hospital. Appointments are required. Meet in the Tower lobby.

These classes offer comprehensive information on pregnancy, labor and birth, as well as relaxation and breathing techniques. Mom-to-be and her partner or support person can explore the many choices available to make their birth experience personal and positive. Meet in the Tower Lobby and your instructor will escort you to your class.

Childbirth Preparation Course: Riverside Doctors' Hospital Williamsburg, Williamsburg
These classes offer comprehensive information on pregnancy, labor and birth, as well as relaxation and breathing techniques. Mom-to-be and her partner or support person can explore the many choices available to make their birth experience personal and positive. Classes are held in Riverside Doctors' Hospital's Conference Rooms A & B (once through main entrance, the room is immediately on your right).

Baby Care Class: Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News
You are counting down the days to your baby's arrival. What an exciting time! In our two-hour Baby Care Class, expectant patents will become familiar with many aspects of daily infant care. This includes bathing, diapering, feeding and helping to keep your baby safe. Come join this rewarding class in preparation for taking home your baby. Meet in the Tower lobby and your instructor will escort you to your classroom.

Breastfeeding Class: Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News
Breastfeeding is natural, but there are skills to be learned that can help promote successful breastfeeding. In this two-hour educational class, our lactation consultant will help familiarize expectant parents with the knowledge and skills they need to get breastfeeding off to a great start. Meet in the Tower lobby and your instructor will escort you to your classroom.

Preparation for Scheduled C-Section: Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News
This two-hour class has been designed for the expectant couple who knows that their baby will be delivered by cesarean. In this class you will take a closer look into what to expect during a cesarean birth or C-section. Meet in the Tower lobby and your instructor will escort you to your classroom.

Labor Techniques with Comfort Measures: Riverside Medical Office Building, Newport News
This two-hour class will show a variety of comfort measures and coping techniques for labor. Measures and techniques include releasing tension and relaxation, breathing patterns, positive labor positions, use of a birthing ball, dealing with back labor, use of heat and cold, visualization role of the labor partner. Please bring three pillows and a blanket or mat to this class, held in the Physical Therapy area on the first floor of the medical office building.

Back to Work & Breastfeeding: Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News
This is especially for women who breastfeed and will be going back to work or school. It is recommended that you take this class when you are pregnant. However, if you have a long maternity leave, you may choose to take this class after your baby is born, but at least four weeks before you plan to return to work or school. You may bring your baby to class with you. Meet in the Tower lobby and your instructor will escort you to your classroom.

Grandparents Class, Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News
Grandparents-to-be are invited to join our two-hour session to learn of changes affecting baby care today. Please join us for topics covered, including care of a newborn, changes in the role of grandparents, safety at home and car seat laws. We will also tour Labor and Delivery and the Women and Infant Care areas. Meet in the Tower lobby and your instructor will escort you to your classroom.

Introduction of Baby to Your Pet: Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News
This two-hour class has been designed for the expectant parents who have a pet and would like to learn some skills that will assist in a smoother transition when your baby arrives home. Meet in the Tower lobby and your instructor will escort you to your classroom.

Car Seat Safety Check: Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News
Riverside offers free car seat safety checks to be sure that you have installed your baby's car seat correctly. Please schedule this through Riverside Nurse at 757-875-7880.

Friends and Family Infant CPR: Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News
It's unlikely the need would arise, but if it did you would want to know exactly what to do. This class is designed for parents, grandparents, family members, friends and anyone else who might be caring for your baby. It will tell you how to recognize the need for CPR. Basic CPR and choking prevention will be presented. No certification will be provided. Meet in the Tower lobby and your instructor will escort you to your classroom.

Rookie Dads: Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News
Rookie Dads class prepares expectant dads to face the challenges of being a new dad. This free class shows dads how to take care of their baby's needs, how to interact with their new baby and gives great tips from a father's perspective taught by a certified Fatherhood Consultant. The session includes great take-home information as well as a father-friendly diaper bag of supplies for baby. Healthy Mom & Baby Exercise Program During Pregnancy: Riverside Wellness & Fitness Center, Newport News
Exercise has numerous benefits for you and your unborn baby, so this is a great time to consider appropriate exercise. Pregnancy and postpartum are times to increase and maintain your fitness. Moms-to-be come together for fun, low-impact fitness classes at Riverside Wellness & Fitness Center - Peninsula. Classes are free for moms-to-be who plan to deliver at Riverside Regional Medical Center. Call for more information on our classes that have been approved for expectant moms, such as aqua aerobics, low-impact aerobics and restorative yoga.

Support Groups

Riverside offers a variety of support groups for our community. Three of our support groups are as follows.

Breastfeeding Moms Get-Together
This FREE service is a wonderful resource for new moms in the Virginia Peninsula area! At our Breastfeeding Moms Get-Together, meet other breastfeeding moms in a supportive environment. Our International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants will discuss various aspects of breastfeeding to help develop skills and boost confidence. We are here for you and weight checks for babies are available. Siblings are welcome, too. Free valet parking is offered at the front entrance of Riverside Regional Medical Center, just steps away from our meeting place.

Forget Me Not
Forget Me Not is a Perinatal Bereavement Support Group that meets Mondays from 1 to 2 p.m. at Riverside Regional Medical Center. Led by Chaplain Linda Hudson, the group offers a safe and relaxed atmosphere while providing support to anyone who has experienced a pregnancy loss or the loss of an infant. This grief support is designed around the books, When Hello Means Goodbye by Pat Schwiebert and Paul Kirk, and Empty Cradle Broken Heart by Deborah L. Davis, PhD. Postpartum Support Group
This is a peer support meeting: You are not alone. You are not to blame. With help you will be well.  The group is free and open to women during pregnancy or first year postpartum. The group provides a safe, healing space to share experiences, emotions and support. Babies in arms are welcome as well as your support person. The group is facilitated by Postpartum Support Virginia. This is a free service. Proper nutrition is important throughout life but it is especially crucial during pregnancy. Changes that occur in your body may require a specialized diet to better manage diabetes, high blood pressure or other conditions.
