James C. Kyriakedes, MD

Dr. Kyriakedes earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati. He completed an orthopedic surgery residency at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, followed by fellowship training in hand and upper extremity surgery at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. Dr. Kyriakedes is eligible for board certification by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Kyriakedes was drawn to orthopedic surgery, specifically of the hand, wrist and elbow, for the opportunity to improve the quality of patients’ lives limited by injuries or degenerative conditions. Recognizing that our hands are the center of interaction with the world around us, he finds it extremely rewarding to help a musician return to music or a grandmother to playing with her grandchildren. Dr. Kyriakedes always treats his patients as he would want his family treated, keeping in mind that many conditions can be healed non-operatively, while others require surgical intervention to minimize pain and to maximize clinical and functional outcomes. His goal is to tailor treatment to each patient’s unique situation and expectations.

Training at busy academic trauma and referral centers has prepared Dr. Kyriakedes with an imperative balance of cutting-edge surgical options and tried-and-true “gold standard” treatments. His areas of special interest include hand, wrist and elbow arthritis, including joint fusions, joint replacement and arthroscopy; traumatic injuries from the fingertip to elbow, causing fractures (broken bones), dislocations and tendon and nerve lacerations; as well as sports injuries to the fingers, thumb, wrist and elbow. He also treats hand numbness or tingling, generalized hand and arm pain, finger triggering and hand tumors.

Originally from Ohio, Dr. Kyriakedes and his wife both grew up visiting the Atlantic Ocean and have always wanted to live near it. Moving to Hampton Roads has fulfilled that dream, and they enjoy exploring all of the area’s unique cities, neighborhoods and water with their young son. Dr. Kyriakedes loves outdoor recreation, traveling with his family and watching football.
