The largest facility of its kind on the Virginia Peninsula, Riverside Emergency and Trauma Center is staffed by physicians specially trained in emergency and trauma medicine. It is here we deliver lifesaving care for critically ill or injured patients 24/7. Located on the campus of Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, it is the region’s only accredited Trauma Center. Riverside has over 500 medically distinguished providers across nearly every specialty who work with our Emergency and Trauma physicians to diagnose and treat almost any type of critical injury or medical condition.
There are over 40 private rooms in the Emergency and Trauma Center for ill or injured emergency patients and two state-of-the art trauma bays. Emergency Department physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners also oversee care in the 18-bed Observation Unit located in the Pavilion, a recently constructed 250,000 sq. ft. addition to the medical center that opened January 2013.
The center’s full range of emergency and trauma services includes two helipads where air ambulance helicopters may bring critically ill or injured patients from throughout the region.
Riverside Forensic Nurse Examiner Program
Riverside's Forensic Nursing Program specializes in care for victims of violence. Our specially trained nurses care for the physical, psychological and social trauma that occurs in patients who have been assaulted or abused. Riverside Forensic Nurses also have specialized knowledge of the legal system. They collect evidence, provide medical testimony in court, and provide consultation to legal authorities.
Riverside Hand In Hand
Riverside Hand In Hand is a hospital-based violence intervention program represents a basic public health approach to reducing community violence. Concurrent with the medical treatment of injuries suffered by victims of violence, hospital-based staff provide support for the social needs of victims, their families, and friends by providing wraparound services and other interventions to dissuade them from retaliatory acts, to reduce reinjury and to lessen the likelihood of new violence occurring. By helping individuals make positive changes, we strive to improve the lives of those we serve.

Riverside Walter Reed Hospital is a 67-bed hospital with a 24-hour Emergency Room equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Our doctors see approximately 30,000 patients annually. We have 11 emergency exam rooms and are affiliated with Riverside Regional Emergency & Trauma Center where, by ambulance or LifeEvac helicopter, we are quickly able to transfer critical patients to our level II Trauma Center, Certified Stroke Center and Heart and Vascular Center. Emergency physicians are supported by over 100 Riverside Medical Group physicians across nearly every specialty, many of whom maintain office hours in the Gloucester and Middle Peninsula area.

Serving the entire Eastern Shore of Virginia,Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital is a 52-bed hospital with a 24-hour emergency room with 13 private treatment rooms equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Trained in emergency medicine, our doctors treat more than 18,000 patients annually. Most emergent and trauma situations can be handled right here, close to home, but highly specialized procedures are available within the Riverside system and are just a helicopter ride away.
Riverside Tappahannock Hospital Emergency Room

Serving Essex, Richmond and Westmoreland counties as well as the northern-most portions of Lancaster, Northumberland, Middlesex and King and Queen counties, Riverside Tappahannock Hospital is a 67-bed hospital with a 24-hour emergency room with 10 treatment rooms equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Trained in emergency medicine, our doctors treat more than 20,000 patients annually. Stroke and trauma patients may be transferred to Richmond or by ambulance or LifeEvac helicopter, to Riverside Regional Emergency & Trauma Center where we are able to transition critical patients to our level II Trauma Center, Certified Stroke Center and Heart and Vascular Center quickly.
LifeEvac Critical Care Helicopter
Air ambulance transports help save thousands of lives for victims of serious accidents and severe illness. Riverside, in partnership with LifeEvac of Virginia, provides this lifesaving service to our community.
LifeEvac is a helicopter air ambulance capable of flying up to 135 mph. It can transport two patients at a time and is staffed around-the-clock with a pilot, critical care flight nurse and paramedic. LifeEvac can quickly reach locations throughout the Peninsula and Middle Peninsula region, quickly transporting patients to the Emergency and Trauma Center at Riverside Regional Medical Center.
