No stranger to the Middle Peninsula, Dr. Long transitioned from a hospitalist at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital back to internal medicine.

Following more than three years of serving the residents of the Middle Peninsula as a hospitalist at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital, James “Blake” Long, M.D. is seeing new patients at Internal Medicine Associates of Gloucester, located on the Riverside Walter Reed Hospital campus just off of Main Street and Medical Drive.Blake Long, MD

“Health care is becoming increasingly more complex,” Dr. Long said, delighted to serve the community now as a primary care physician and “help patients navigate through what they need to get and stay healthy.”

Board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Long earned his medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and then completed an internal medicine residency at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. He also earned a Physician Executive Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Tennessee.

With a fondness for adult patient care and the breadth of internal medicine, Dr. Long said he is honored to care for patients with a variety of medical histories and backgrounds. He firmly believes in the importance of taking time to get to know each patient, and then tailoring a treatment plan to the individual’s wants, needs, values and lifestyle in order to be most effective.

While Dr. Long enjoyed the work he did at the hospital, acute care medicine “can be very busy,” he said. “Patients come in to the hospital and then return to their family doctor. I have lots of time now with patients and I enjoy being a family doctor again very much.”

As some of his patients could attest, that often means more time for humor, a treatment philosophy Dr. Long brings to his work. “People like to laugh,” Dr. Long said. “That’s one of the better things that we can do as human beings. It’s just a wonderful expression of joy. It can help people in some of those times when they are really hurting.”

In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Long has served in numerous clinical, educational and administrative leadership roles throughout his career. He also serves as a volunteer physician for the Gloucester Mathews Care Clinic.

Having grown up in the mountains of North Carolina, Dr. Long has always loved rural communities and their unique way of life—and Virginia’s Middle Peninsula is no exception. He enjoys kayak fishing and paddle boarding in the spring and summer, and road biking during the colder months. Dr. Long is happily married with three young daughters.
