GLOUCESTER, Va. – Riverside Convalescent Center in Saluda is one of several Riverside long-term care facilities to earn a five-star rating from the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The Center in Saluda joins other Riverside facilities in achieving a five-star CMS rating – the highest possible – which places it among the top 10 percent of facilities in the country. “This public recognition validates what we have always known here,” said Christine Morillo, administrator of the Riverside Convalescent Center in Saluda. “The CMS ratings are an important validation tool so that the public understands the quality of care we provide.”
The CMS ratings were introduced to help patients and families compare nursing home facilities via Medicare’s Nursing Home Compare website. Nursing home performance is based upon criteria such as staffing levels, clinical quality indicators, and unannounced on-site health inspections.
With a continued focus on improvement initiatives centered around patient falls, wound care, urinary tract infections, monitoring of pain, and use of antipsychotic medications, more than half of Riverside's facilities earned CMS’s top rating this year.
“Riverside Convalescent Center in Saluda is a special place,” adds Morillo. “This rating is a testament to the entire team, because everyone here believes in our mission, to care for others as we would care for those we love. No one on our care team is working toward the five-star rating itself, but rather they want to be part of a team that cares for one another and cares for our patients and residents,” Morillo continues. “I’m proud of their collective efforts and their dedication to quality care. I’m happy to be able to share that with the entire community in announcing this recognition.”
