American Red Cross swimming lessons for kids

Our kids' swim lessons build strong and confident swimmers! Classes progress through six levels of fundamentals, covering water safety and rescue skills, basic strokes, breathing techniques, and more.

We offer four-week and eight-week sessions for most levels. Four-week classes meet twice a week; eight-week classes meet once a week.

Lessons are available at both fitness center locations.

Choosing a Level

Pick an appropriate level based on age and current swimming ability. Please see the class descriptions below to determine which level will be best for your child.

Learn to Swim Class Levels

Explore below to learn the primary focus and class schedule for each level.

Beginner Swimmer   Level 1 to 2

In levels 1 and 2, kids will adapt to the aquatic environment through water exploration. They'll learn fundamentals of the Learn to Swim program: water safety, kicking, floating, and gliding. This class is for children with no swim experience.

Level 1: Water Exploration

In level 1, children will learn:

  • Water adjustment
  • Breath control
  • Supported kicking
  • Entering and exiting the pool independently
  • Safety skills

Level 2: Fundamentals

In level 2, children will learn:

  • Unsupported kicking
  • Deep-water exploration
  • Floating
  • Gliding
  • Combined stroke
  • Rhythmic breathing
  • Safety skills

Level 1 & 2 Class Schedule:

Advanced Beginner Swimmer   Level 3

Kids in level 3 will establish stroke readiness by building on the fundamental skills learned in the Beginner Swimmer class. They'll gain confidence through guided practice of beginner stroke techniques and advanced safety skills. This class is for children who are able to swim unsupported on their front and back for 5 yards.

Level 3: Stroke Development

In level 3, kids will learn:

  • Breath control with bobbing and rotary breathing
  • Introduction to front crawl
  • Introduction to back crawl
  • Elementary backstroke
  • Dolphin kick
  • Advanced safety skills

Level 3 Class Schedule:

  • Eight-Week Lessons

Intermediate/Advanced Swimmer   Level 4 to 6

In levels 4 to 6, kids will learn the final strokes-breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly-along with open turns. Additionally, they'll polish the strokes presented in previous levels, and swim with greater ease, efficiency, power, and smoothness over greater distances.

Level 4: Stroke Improvement

This class is for children who can swim comfortably on their front and back with sidebreathing, elementary back stroke, and dolphin kick 15 yards.

In level 4, kids will learn:

  • Introduction to breaststroke, sidestroke, and butterfly
  • Turns
  • Alternate kicks for treading water

Level 4 Class Schedule:

  • Four-Week Lessons
  • Eight-Week Lessons

Level 5: Stroke Refinement

This class is for children who can swim front and back crawl, elementary back stroke 25 yards, side stroke, breast stroke, and butterfly for 15 yards.

In level 5, kids will learn:

  • Perform all strokes at increased distances with proficiency
  • Combine diving skills with swimming

Level 5 Class Schedule:

  • Four-Week Lessons
  • Eight-Week Lessons

Level 6: Swimming and Skill Proficiency

This class is for children who know all strokes. This level will concentrate on proficiency.

In level 6, kids will learn:

  • Review and perfect all strokes and skills presented in previous levels of the Learn to Swim program
  • Learn advanced rescue skills

Closed Classes: We reserve the right to close programs to prevent overcrowding.

Wait List: If you are placed on a waiting list, please do not pay for the class. You are not officially enrolled. The Aquatics Office will call you when a spot becomes available for your child.

Inclement Weather: The pool will close during thunderstorms and will reopen 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder or flash of lightning.
