Riverside Program Raises the Bar for Family Caregiver Experience, Exceeding the National Average in All Eight Measurement Areas on Hospice Compare

Tappahannock, Va. – Riverside Tappahannock Hospice recently earned high marks from family caregivers on Hospice Compare, a national survey comparing hospice agencies from across the country. It exceeded the national average in all eight measurement areas of the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) which focuses on metrics related to quality of care and patient experience.

It was the first time Hospice CAHPS Survey results were released publically by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), which manages the Hospice Compare website – giving families a powerful resource to help them choose a hospice provider.

The Hospice CAHPS Survey reports on a total of eight measures on Hospice Compare, asking questions about domains that are important to patients and their families.

Riverside Tappahannock Hospice scored exceptionally high – 96 percent – on the measure for “treating patient with respect” and “emotional and spiritual support,” where it scored 92 percent. It also scored 92 percent on the measure of “willing to recommend this hospice,” where it exceeded the national average by eight percent.

“We always want the very best for our loved ones, especially in that time of need that calls for hospice, when providing comfort and quality of life are so incredibly important,” said Esther Desimini, Riverside Vice President and Administrator of the Riverside Tappahannock Hospital and surrounding Northern Neck community. Prior to joining Riverside, Desimini worked as an oncology clinician for more than 30 years. “While there are many ways to measure a provider, Riverside Tappahannock Hospice is especially proud of its strong performance on the CAHPS Hospice Survey results, which paint a true picture of the family caregiver experience.”

Published on Hospice Compare, the Hospice CAHPS Survey results apply to all Medicare-certified hospices that had at least 30 completed surveys between April 1, 2015 and March 31, 2017.

Other highlights from the survey include measures for “communication with family” and “rating of this hospice,” with Riverside Tappahannock Hospice scoring 87 percent in both categories and beating the national average by seven points in each.

The Hospice CAHPS Survey is the latest in a series of developments underscoring the quality of the robust care offerings available to older adults through Riverside facilities and programs on the Northern Neck.

Most recently, Riverside Tappahannock Home Health joined other Riverside home health agencies that made the 2017 HomeCare Elite list – a compilation of the most successful home care providers in the country. It was the eighth time Riverside Tappahannock Home Health made the prestigious list, placing it in the top 25 percent of agencies in the U.S. based on key performance measures.

The Orchard, a Riverside Healthy Living Community on the Northern Neck, has earned numerous awards and professional accolades recently. In February, The American College of Health Care Administrators honored The Orchard administrator Pam Doshier with the Eli Pick Facility Leadership Award, which recognizes administrators who have led their organizations to a high level of quality and places The Orchard among the top 11 percent of skilled nursing facilities in the country.

Earlier, CMS recognized The Orchard as a 5-Star Nursing Facility, while the American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living honored The Orchard’s approach to long-term care with a 2017 Silver Award – one of just six awarded to Virginia long-term care facilities and 191 facilities nationwide.
