Susan C. Herndon, AGNP
Cancer Care, Medical Oncology
Susie earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Johns Hopkins University and a Master of Science in Nursing with an oncology concentration from Duke University. She is board-certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board as an Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner in Primary Care, and holds additional certifications as an Oncology Certified Nurse and a Certified Clinical Research Coordinator.
Drawn to oncology by her mother's experience with breast cancer, Susie first worked as a nurse on the solid tumor inpatient oncology floor at Johns Hopkins. Since that time, much of her 20-year nursing career has been spent caring for cancer patients in a variety of settings, from large academic medical centers to community hospitals and independent practices. Now a Nurse Practitioner with a continual fondness for oncology, Susie believes people should be able to obtain high-quality health care in their own local communities.
With a passion for meeting people where they are, Susie recognizes that everyone’s story is unique, as is their approach to illness. It's important to her to listen to each patient, understand his or her priorities, explain complex medical concepts, and then find a mutually agreeable way to move forward. In oncology, sometimes that means expediting diagnosis and treatment for one person but respecting another person’s desire to move at a slower or less aggressive pace.
After growing up in Frederick, Maryland, Susie studied English at the College of William & Mary before working as a nurse in Baltimore, Atlanta and Richmond. Today she finds her commute from Mechanicsville to Tappahannock quite worthwhile, thanks in part to the area’s natural beauty. A mom to two of the smartest, funniest teenagers she’s ever met, Susie loves planning and taking road trips, in addition to reading, swimming, running and quilting.
